HomeMy WebLinkAboutFourth of July Steering Committee Minutes 2009-06-24 June 24, 2009 Fourth of July Steering Committee Minutes A regular meeting of the Fourth of July Steering Committee was held on Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at City Hall, located at 910 S Friendswood Dr, Friendswood., TX 77546, at which time the following subjects will be considered. The following members and staff were present at the meeting: Corey Kirkland Robin Hall Ken Turner Steve Pate Dan Morgan Michelle Scarpa Stefanie Scarpa Skip Redding Tony Scarpa Gary Wenzel Tommy McDonald Renae Rives Rachel Williams, volunteer Michelle Mower, visitor Roberto Minervini, visitor Jim Barr, Council Liaison Marc Faber, FVFD Chief Lucy Woltz, Chamber of Commerce Liaison Josh Rogers. Friendswood PD Liaison Mike Jones, FISD Transportation James Toney. Director of Community Services Michael Boyett, Staff Kimberly Ramirez, Staff Darrell Niedert, Staff 1. Call to order: Meeting was called to order at 7:15 p.m. 2. Communications from the public: Guest, Michelle Mower, informed the committee that Michocho films will be filming the parade this year for a movie she is co-producing called Marfa Red. Roberto Minervini, the director will be filming in Houston area for the movie. Ms. Mower stated that there is a part in the script where it calls for a 4th of July parade, and as a longtime Friendswood resident she thought Friendswood’s 4th of July parade would be perfect for the film. The movie based on a road trip drama, with people from different backgrounds in the film, driving to Marfa. The spiritual journey films actors from Houston and the scene that takes place at the parade will consist of a woman (who has cancer) intermingling with people in the 4th of July parade. Michelle Mower did confirm that the City of Friendswood will be recognized in the credits of the film. She stated that the city will be able to have access to stills of the parade being filmed. Corey Kirkland assigned Craig Kovacevich as the committee member that will assist the movie crew the morning of the parade and will meet the crew at their staging area at 7am. The director requested to film police officers in the parade, Josh Rogers gave permission to film officers thru out the parade since many police officers will be stationed thru out the parade. Ken Turner made a motion to assign Craig Kovacevich to assist the film crew Robin Hall second the motion and the motion passed unanimously. Lucy Woltz suggested the film crew to be stationed on the corner of Spreading Oaks near the library, the film crew agreed. Josh Rogers stated that the FCC overflow plan would be moving drivers to Windsong school. Josh Rogers also said that they can have officers at the intersection of FM518 and FM528 to help control the traffic flow after the evening program is over. Robin Hall wanted to confirm with Mike Jones of FISD transportation that buses will pick up (FCC or CBHS) and drop off at the same location, Mr. Jones confirmed that drivers will be informed of. Mikes Jones stated that their will be one lift bus from FISD helping the City’s senior city bus at the dignitary pickup location. Michelle suggested about adding the shuttle location change on FISD’s reader board. Corey Kirkland stated he will call Mark Griffon, with FISD to ask if they can change the reader board to inform the public that the shuttle location for the evening program has been changed to FCC. 3. Minutes: Robin made a motion to approve the June 10, 2009 minutes as presented, Gary Wenzel second the motion and the motion passed unanimously. 4. Discussion and possible action regarding the 2009, 4th of July Celebration: A. Parade: There are currently 90 entries that have been turned in for the parade. Skip Redding stated that he hasn’t been able to get in touch with Kam with the Goddard School concerning the sponsorship of the dignitary breakfast. Skip Redding informed the board of what the menu will be for the dignitary breakfast. The decorating committee for the dignitary breakfast will be meeting Friday morning, which consist of Michelle Scarpa, Stefanie Scarpa, Skip Redding, and Kimberly Ramirez. Tuesday will be the cutoff date for accepting parade entries. Gary Wenzel will get with Mr. Carr, with the replica Liberty Bell entry in providing the trailer for Liberty Bell . When calling for the parade entries, staff will confirm with horse entries that they have their Coggins Report and get a name of the participant to confirm so their won’t be any problems the morning of the parade. Steve Pate stated that the drain area near Comerica bank needs to be cleaned. James Toney stated that the parks crew will clean that area before the parade. Tony Scarpa informed the board that the streets will be painted on Friday at 4:30 or 5:00 p.m. Lucy Woltz stated that vehicles will be picked up Friday by the Lions club volunteers and will be driving Saturday morning, the day of the parade. Corey Kirkland informed that board that the gators will be delivered to City Hall Friday morning. B. Day Program: Their has be 36 booths entries turned in for the day program. Two generators will be needed for the day program. Dan Morgan stated that Party Animals have confirmed for the day entertainment for the children. Zydeco Dots at set to play for the day program. Dan Morgan suggests setting up a cooling station out at the day program. Robin Hall made a motion to purchase two cooling stations for the day program, Stefanie Scarpa second the motion and the motion passed unanimously. C. Evening: Dan Morgan has made the timeline for the evening program and will be sending it out to committee members soon. Elizabeth Conger will be singing the national anthem the night of the evening program along with Carley Taylor and Megan Holmes will sing other patriotic songs that evening. Al Saylor has been confirmed with the sky diving event at the evening program. Dan Morgan informed the committee that the band is requesting 3 rooms to accommodate the band the night of the 4th, James Toney will be checking on rates. Ken Turner will be checking on rates for the transportation from the hotel to the airport for the band. James Toney asked if FISD if staff and committee members could use the parking lot area on the new junior high, FISD declined our request. Their will be 5 vendors for the evening show. Radios will be delivered to city hall on Friday or Monday. The radios and gators will be signed out by all users. White shirts from last year will be worn during the day portion of the event and the new blue shirts will be worn during the night program. 5.
