HomeMy WebLinkAboutSCAC Minutes 2009-09-08 RegularREGULAR MEETING Senior Citizens Advisory Committee September 8, 2009 Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee, which was held at the Activity Building in Meeting Room D at 9:00 a.m. on September 8, 2009 with all board members present, constitutes a quorum: Committee Members: Ms. Jean Bilderback- Chair Ms. Si Pate ā€“ Vice Chair Ms. Ginger Spade- Regular Member Ms. Rae McMullen- Alternate Member Staff/Liaison: Michael Boyett, Recreation Coordinator Genie Balderaz, Senior Program Manager The following items were discussed: 1. Ms. Bilderback called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. 2. The invocation was given by Ms. Si Pate. 3. Ms. Bilderback made a motion and approved the August minutes. The motion carried unanimously. 4. The Annual Fall Picnic will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2009, from 11:30 to 2:00pm at Stevenson Park. Hot dogs will be served by Joe DeBonis. Bingo will take place from 12:30to 1:30pm. Jeter Memorial Funeral Home will sponsor this event. There are nine $5.00 gift cards and one $10.00 gift card. 5. Senior Expo Day will take place on Wednesday, October 14, from 10:00 to 1:00pm at Stevenson Park. There will be free Bingo, free food and door prizes. There will also be vendors from 10- 11, food 11-12 and bingo from 12-1. It will be sponsored by Apostle Home Health and Friendswood Healthcare Center. 6. The Health Fair will take place on Tuesday, October 20, from 10-1pm. There should be between 30 and 35 vendors. It is currently in the works. There will be a Halloween theme for this event for those who would like to participate and dress up. There will be no classes on this day. 7. Flu shots will be provided by the Galveston County Health District on Thursday, Oct 29, from 10-12. They will be given by Charles Kelly. They are free if you have Medicare, otherwise it is $20. Participants must bring their Medicare card to show proof of Medicare. 8. Upcoming trips and events include a trip to Gulf Greyhound Park, on Wednesday, October 7. The cost is $12 per person, which includes lunch. We will leave the activity building at 10:30 and return around 3:30. On Thursday, Oct. 15, we will go to the George R. Brown Convention Center. The cost is $12 per person. Lunch is on- your- own. The departure time is 9:00am and we will return around 2:30pm. Next, there will be a trip to George Ranch on Wednesday, Oct. 21. The cost is $20 per person. This includes lunch. We will leave at 9:00am and return around 3:00pm. On Monday, Oct. 26, from 11- 1pm, there will be a Lunch Nā€™ Fun, sponsored by Don Fredo. There will be BBQ with all the trimmings. Halloween in the Park will be Sunday, October 25, from 6-8pm at Stevenson Park. Anyone who would like to donate candy should make sure it is wrapped and give it to a senior staff member. 9. The balance in our Senior DNRS account, as of September 2, is $5655.53. Committee Members voted and agreed to purchase 100 chairs and 2 chair carts in the amount of $2648.00. We also purchased Bicycle playing cards with large print for $52.03. We purchased a sound paging system in the amount of $1954.70. The total came to $4654.73. (We also purchased a small ladder, a table cart and a flashlight for the bus, not included in this total.) 10. Comments made by the Public N/A. 11. Comments made by Committee Members N/A. 12.
