bring candy and decorate their booths. Janice Frankie will give free
massages in the D-Room; other vendors will be set up in the main room and
in the ABC Room. All regular activities are cancelled for that day. We are
hoping to get around 35 or 40 vendors to participate in the event.
7. Goals and objectives for 2010 were discussed. Ms. Frankie Santoro and Ms.
Jill Musser have had a lot of success with the Welcoming Committee. The
numbers are growing. They recently gave a presentation at The Gardens and
generated a lot of interest from the residents there. The crochet class has
been working hard and making a lot of caps for the troops overseas. They
are also currently making lap quilts for patients with breast cancer. Ms.
Santoro suggested that we also deliver flyers for our events to different
HOAs to advertise among their groups.
8. A copy of the budget report was not available.
9. Comments made by the Public: Mr. Jeff Newpher, with the Friendswood
Reporter, attended the meeting. He pointed out that many council members
have been discussing the different options for getting a bus. He said there
was talk about purchasing a new bus, as well as the possibility of leasing a
bus. He encouraged the Committee Members to contact their council
members. Right now, he says, they are on the side of the seniors.
10. Comments made by the Committee Members: Ms. Frankie Santoro
proposed hosting a small Veteran’s Day celebration at the Activity Building
(either a few days before or a few days after Veteran’s Day). She suggested
that we invite local veterans for cake and refreshments. She has a few
veterans in mind that could come and speak to the seniors. It was also
suggested that we invite the high school to help with a small ceremony. We
could also invite Pearland to join us in honoring the veterans. Ms. Si Pate
made a suggestion that we all show support and encouragement for
Councilman Bill Holbert. She says that he has worked very hard to help our
program and that Committee Members should let him know how much he is
appreciated. Ms. Frankie Santoro also made the recommendation that we
place a box by the door to collect donated food items.
11. Report from Recreation Coordinator: The bus situation is still uncertain. We
will not know whether or not it has been approved until September 13th,
2010. That is when the final decision will be made. There will be further
discussion about it at the next council meeting, and seniors are encouraged
to attend. The awning was eliminated from the budget. Ms. Frankie Santoro
made the motion to purchase the new awning using the senior account funds.
The motion was seconded by Ms. Si Pate and the vote was unanimous to
purchase the new awning. Mr. Paul Gordner inquired about the floor. We are
hopeful that it will be approved, but the decision remains uncertain.
12. The meeting was adjourned at 9:49am.
