Group. The topic will be “Medicare Options.” Also, Thursday August 5th,

with Bayou Pines and Ashton Care Center will sponsor the event. Monday,

Thursday, August 26th, 2010, we will have an Ice Cream Social, sponsored
by Linda McCormack with Money Management International. It will take
place from 1:00pm until 2:00pm. The topic is “Avoiding Identity Theft.”
Several suggestions were offered by Committee members for future
trips and events. Ms. Jill Musser made several suggestions, including a trip
to the Sea Center, a ride on the Metro, followed by lunch at Spaghetti
Warehouse, as well as a Party Boat rental on Clear Lake. She also mentioned
a trip to Armand Bayou as well as a trip to the circus next year. Ms. Musser
also made mention of bringing a magic show to the building for the seniors
to enjoy. Ms. Genie Balderaz suggested a trip out to the Antique Store in
Spring. She thought it would make a good HP1 trip for September or
October. Ms. Ginger Spade recommended a fishing trip at Centennial Park.
The lake was recently regraded and should be safer for seniors. “Senior
Fish” should resume again next year. Ms. Farankie Santoro suggested
hosting a Clown School event at the building. She knows someone who
could come out here for free to teach the class. There was also a suggestion
to have a potluck in August since there is no Lunch n’ Fun scheduled for that
month. However, because it was not advertised in the newsletter, we will
hold off until another month.
5. Our Casino Extravaganza will take place Friday, August 20th, 2010, from
2:00pm until 5:00pm. It is a free event. We have contracted Casino Parties
Unlimited to supply the tables and dealers for the day. They are charging
$1,700 for this service. Peter Hoth will DJ the event. We will serve
sandwiches, chips and drinks throughout the day. Door prizes will be given
away periodically throughout the day. Because of complaints about last
year’s prize giveaways, only one prize will be awarded to seniors winning
the prizes. Tickets taken at the door will be placed into the drawing for door
prizes. Tickets won at the tables will be placed into the drawing for the Las
Vegas giveaway. We are still raising funds for the event.
6. Our Volunteer/ Sponsor Appreciation Party will take place on Thursday,
September 30th, 2010, from 3:00pm until 6:00pm. We will provide
certificates for all of the sponsors and volunteers that have helped us out
throughout the year. We will serve finger foods and a special cake for the
event. Special plaques will be presented to Don Fredo for all of his help and
support. Greg and Pauletta Jeter from Jeter Memorial Funeral Home will
also receive a plaque, as well as DJ Jackson and Aaron Halford with Apostle
Home Health. They have been our top sponsors this year. Certificates will be
divided into Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze, based on level of support.
7. Goals and Objectives for 2010 were discussed and are moving along
smoothly. Ms. Frankie Santoro reported that the Welcoming Committee has
a meeting with The Gardens of Friendswood to discuss our program. They
need more bags put together to pass out.
Ms. Jill Musser questioned the status of the awning we hoped to build for the
bus riders. Mr. Michael Boyett reported that we have a new quote from
Aluminum Arts for $4,380. It is by far the best quote thus far. However, it
still has to be approved by Council.
8. The budget was discussed in detail. As of July 9th, 2010, the total funds
available are $7,389.07. There were a few suggestions made by Committee
members about how to spend the money. Ms. Ginger Spade mentioned the
need for a new television. Ms. Jill Musser also suggested purchasing a new
Wii. There would also be a need to purchase a T.V. cart. Ms. Frankie
Santoro made the motion to vote for the purchase of the new television, Wii
and T.V. cart. Ms. Ginger Spade seconded the motion and the purchase was
approved by a majority vote.
9. Comments made by the Public: Ms. Jill Musser reported that she had
received several complaints about Bridge members saving seats and not
allowing new members to participate. She understood that there was not to
be any saving seats and that everyone should be welcoming and kind. Ms. Si
Pate says that she has spoken with several Bridge players and asked that they
do not save seats and that everyone is greeted kindly. She cannot however,
force anyone to be nice.
10. Comments made by the Committee Members: Ms. Jill Musser pointed out
that Advisory Committee Members should make a concentrated effort to
greet new members and anyone that walks through our doors. Committee
Members are representatives of the program and should go out of their way
to make everyone feel welcome.
Ms. Ginger Spade made a comment about using program funds to treat
Committee Members to lunch. She complained that it was not fair to other
seniors participating in the program and the money should not be spent to
satisfy the needs of Committee Members only. It was decided however, that
using the money to treat Committee Members was a way of showing
appreciation for the time that they volunteer. Ms. Rae McMullen made the
motion to vote on the issue and it was seconded by Ms. Dorothy Montz. The
vote was unanimous in favor of treating Committee Members to lunch as
long as the restaurant was decided upon fairly.
11. Report from Recreation Coordinator: N/A
12. The meeting was adjourned at 10:16am.
