There was a discussion about the possibility of hosting a Volunteer/ Sponsor Appreciation Party to thank all of our volunteers and sponsors that we have had throughout this year. Each sponsor and volunteer would receive a certificate of thanks for their support. We would serve finger foods (sandwiches, chips, dip) and perhaps a large cake. We would invite the mayor and send out invitations. The proposed date would be Thursday, September 30th, 2010, from 3:00pm until 5:00pm. We could take the seniors home at 1:00pm and close the building early, so the volunteers and sponsors could have the space to themselves. Everyone agreed that it is a good idea and we should follow through with the planning process. 5. Upcoming trips and events: Thursday, July 15, 2010, we intend to take a trip down Telephone Road, with author Burton Chapman as our step on guide. As of June 3rd, 2010, we have a total of $6,141.94 in the Senior Account. Most expenses have been taken from the Senior Events account. We need to start spending the money from the Non- Resident Fees received. There were questions about the new benches and picnic tables. We are working with the Boy Scouts on plans to build the benches and fix the picnic tables. Ms. Rae McMullen asked about the Bibles for the Bible Study class. The City funds cannot be used to purchase Bibles. Separation of Church and State prevents government funds to be used for religious purposes. It was suggested that the Bible Study class could take up a collection to purchase them. We need to spend a lot more money by September 30th, otherwise we risk losing funding from the City. There were several recommendations about how to spend the money. Ms. Jill Musser suggested that we use the money to pay for trips, but if we do one trip, we would have to do all of them. People who cannot go on trips would be excluded. Ms. Dorothy Montz mentioned the possibility of having a movie day and we could pay for everyone’s ticket. There was also a recommendation that we take the Advisory Committee out to lunch. Ms. Jill Musser asked about the television and Wii that belong to the Summer Camp. We can purchase a new Wii, but we already have 2 televisions and do not need another one. Mr Paul Gordner mentioned getting shirts for Committee members. We will talk to Kim about ordering them. There was a debate about what color they should be. Tables were ordered and many of the kitchen supplies were purchased. We still need good knives and more deep dish bake ware. All of these suggestions were well received. 7. There was a brief discussion about progress with the Goals and Objectives for 2010. The crochet class has been working on the hats for the troops, but they are still in need of more wool. The Welcoming Committee has been spreading the word and we have had several new seniors come in to join the program. 8. Comments made by the Public: Mr. Jose Galindo had some questions about whether or not we have an AED and the possibility of holding training classes to learn to use the defibrillator. All staff are certified in CPR and to use the AED. We don’t want to train seniors to use the AED because we don’t want any of them to be held liable. The option to offer free CPR/ First Aid classes to seniors is something we could speak with the safety coordinator about. 9. Comments made by the Committee Members: N/A. 10. Report from the Recreation Coordinator: An estimate for the awning was submitted to Council for approval, as well as a quote for the new bus. Both of those decisions should be decided upon at the same time. We are still waiting to hear about the floor. The City Manager is involved and Council is aware of the problem. We are currently getting prices together as far as new tile for the entire main room floor. The tile in the Dining Room was put in at a later date and does not currently need to be replaced. Ms. Genie Balderaz also made a comment about the Council meeting on Monday, June 21st, 2010 at 7:00pm. Mr. Paul Gordner will speak to Council about the senior program and Advisory Board members are encouraged to attend. 11. The meeting was adjourned at 9:57am. _____________________________________ Genie Balderaz, Senior Program Manager Date Approved: July 13, 2010
