The following items were discussed:
1. Paul Gordner called the meeting to order at 9:03am.
2. The invocation was given by Ms. Si Pate.
3. The February 9, 2010 minutes were approved. The motion was made by Ms.
Ginger Spade and it was seconded by Ms. Dorothy Montz.
4. Go Texan Day was a success. We had about 65 people in attendance and
everyone had a great time. They all said the food was very good.
5. The Spring Picnic will take place on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at Stevenson
Park from 11:00am- 1:00pm. Joe DeBonis will cook hot dogs. We will eat
from 11:00- 12:00pm and play Bingo from 1:00- 2:00pm. Jeter Memorial
Funeral home will sponsor the event.
6. Upcoming trips and events: Thursday, April 8th, we will take a trip out to
Galveston, for the Galveston Island Duck Tour. We plan to leave at 9:30am
and return around 3:00pm. The cost of the trip is $15.00 per person and
lunch is on your own at Casey’s Seafood Café. On Thursday, April 22, 2010,
we will go on our HP1 trip to the King’s Orchard in Plantersville. We will
leave the building at 9:00am and plan to return around 3:00pm. The cost of
this trip is $10.00 per person, which includes a picnic lunch at the orchard.
Fruit is sold separately. Friday, April 2nd, the building will be closed for
Good Friday. Tuesday, April 20th and Wednesday, April 21st, Janice Frankie
will be here offering free massages from 9:00am until 3:00pm. You can sign
up for 30 minute increments throughout the day. We will have a Lunch n’
Fun on Monday, April 26th, from 11:00am- 1:00pm. We will serve fried
chicken, mashed potatoes and green beans. This event is sponsored by Andy
Rivera. Finally, on Thursday, April 29th, we will have a Banana Split Social,
from 1:00- 2:00pm. It will be sponsored by Back in Action Chiropractic.
Trips and events in May are still in the works. We will have a Cinco de
Mayo celebration and plan to attend the Greek Festival.
7. As of March 4th, 2010, the total funds available in the senior account are
$5,833.92. There was a question raised about the new awning that was
discussed at the last couple of meetings. A request will be included in the
decision package and brought to council for discussion. It is a health and
safety issue, particularly for the bus riders. We currently have only one
quote and will need to present at least three before council. If the request is
denied, there is also the option to offer to pay half of the cost of the awning
(either from the current funds or through a fundraiser) and perhaps the city
council might be more willing to cover the other half. Ms. Ginger Spade
mentioned the need for another new coat rack. She also asked about the
plaques for the seniors who have passed away. We have a quote for the
plaques from Engraphics and should be able to purchase them this week.
Ms. Jill Musser made the motion to approve the budget and it was seconded
by Ms. Dorothy Montz.
8. Goals for 2010 were discussed: Ms. Si Pate has already begun the production
of helmet liners. She made modifications to the original plans that will make
them fit better. Ms. Pate says she is more than happy to draw up the new
plans to distribute to the crochet class. Ms. Dorothy Montz insists that the
class will, in fact, be able to help with the project.
The Senior Welcoming Committee has posted a flyer and sign- up sheet,
with the help of Ms. Frankie Santoro. There has been some difficulty
obtaining the information we need to contact local seniors, but it is in the
works. The idea was proposed to contact apartment managers of senior
living apartments and ask them for names of their tenants. Perhaps, we could
leave our care packages with them and they could give them to the tenants.
Also, members might try asking local grocery stores to allow them to greet
their customers with information about the program. It is agreed that no
members should simply walk door- to- door. Also, there should be at least
two members at each visit.
Finally, the Senior Picnic was discussed. Ms. Rae McMullen and Ms.
Dorothy Montz will lead the planning of this event. A Wednesday or
Thursday in September was decided to be the best time to have the picnic.
The church across the street might be useful for parking. Mr. Paul Gordner
offered to furnish the music.
9. Elena Luquette mentioned that she had spoken with the Chair of Keep
Friendswood Beautiful about starting a community garden outside our
building. She said that would be a great idea and if committee members
would draw up some plans, they might be able to sponsor some of the cost to
build it. Ms. Dorothy Montz suggested building it by the walkway at the
back of the building. Committee members agreed that this would be a good
starting place. More plans need to be discussed in order to implement the
garden, but there was a general consensus among committee members that
this was a good idea.
10. Ms. Jill Musser brought it to the attention of the Committee and staff that
she had heard several complaints about people being in the building before
9:00am. This is sometimes the case when the bus riders arrive earlier than
our doors open. However, because they don not have a choice in the time
that they arrive, they are allowed inside. Others, driving themselves always
have the option to arrive later or stay in their cars if it is cold outside.
Ms. Si Pate mentioned the need for more square tables.
Mr. Paul Gordner announced that Councilman Bill Holbert had a lot of good
things to say about our program at the last council meeting.
12. The meeting was adjourned at 10:05am.
