HomeMy WebLinkAboutSCAC Minutes 2011-10-11 RegularREGULAR MEETING Senior Citizens Advisory Committee October 11, 2011 Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee, this was held at the Activity Building in Meeting Room D at 9:00 a.m on October 11, 2011 with all board members present, constitutes a quorum: Committee Members: Mr. Paul Gordner, Chair Ms. Jill Musser, Vice Chair Ms. Ginger Spade, Regular Member Ms. Rae McMullan, Regular Member Ms. Irma Trevino, Regular Member Ms. Dorothy Montz, Regular Member Ms. Frankie Santoro, Regular Member Mr. Art Lizza, Regular Member Staff/ Liaison: Michael Boyett, Senior Program Coordinator Genie Balderaz, Senior Program Manager Jamie Eubanks, Assistant Senior Program Manager The following items were discussed: 1. Mr. Paul Gordner called the meeting to order at 9:11am. 2. The invocation was given by Ms. Rae McMullan. 3. The September 13, 2011 minutes were approved. 4. Upcoming trips and events for the month of November include: a. The first Monday of the month we will take a trip to Wal-Mart, departing the building at 12:30pm. On Wednesday, November 2 and Thursday, November 3, we will head to Delta Downs. . Departing the building at 8:00am on November 2 and returning at 6:00pm on November 3. The cost will be $48 for double occupancy and $75 for single occupancy. We will tour the Kemah-Clear Lake Vineyard Thursday, November 10, 2011, leaving the building at 10:00am and returning at 2:00pm, the trip will cost $5 and lunch on your own at the Kemah Boardwalk. On Tuesday, November 15, we are headed to the Woodlands Mall and will take a water taxi tour; we will leave from the building at 9:00am and return at 3:00pm; and the cost will be $5 per person. Lunch will be on your own at the mall. The Gardens at Friendswood Lakes will be hosting a Craft Show on Friday, November 18. This is a free trip and we will leave the building at 10am, b. Sallie Godfrey with Lone Star Legal Aid will be at the center to discuss Wills, on Tuesday, November 1 at 11am. Thursday, November 3 at 12:00pm, we will have guest speaker, Marilyn Simmons come and speak about Medication Management. Misty Fox of Copeland Group will be our guest speaker on Tuesday, November 8 at 12pm to talk about Medicare. Wednesday, November 9, from 11am to 2:30pm we will have the Veterans Day Luncheon. Our birthday social will be on Monday, November 14 at 12:30pm. Also, on Monday, November 14at 10am Kamah Jerath will come in and do an demonstration on Vegetable Carving. On Tuesday, November 15 Rick Gregory with Friendswood Health Care Center will be our guest speaker at 12pm. The NGO Foundation will be giving free hearing aid screenings on Wednesday, November 16 from 10am to 2pm. Our monthly Wii Bowling Tournament is on Wednesday, November16 at 1pm. Thursday, November 17 from 11am to 1pm we will have out Thanksgiving Potluck with entertainment from Wagaround Dancers. LT Gordon with Senior Choice will be our guest speaker on Tuesday, November 22 at 12pm. Susan Cavender with Gardens at Friendswood Lakes will sponsor a Popsicle social on Wednesday, November 23 at 1pm. Monday, November 28 we will have a Fashion Show at 11am. Christine Anderson with Angels Care Home Health will have a Genealogy Class on Tuesday, November 29 from 10 – 11am. Rick Gregory from Friendswood Health Care Center will sponsor a cookie social on Tuesday, November 29 from 1 – 2pm. The last Wednesday, November 30, we will have health screenings from 11am – 12pm and Bingo from 1 – 3pm, sponsored by Apostle Home Health Care. 5. Report on the Volunteer/Sponsor Appreciation: 48 guest in attendance, great food and great certification presentation. 6. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Veteran’s Luncheon: AT&T Pioneers will sponsor the event with lunch from Kelly’s. Lunch menu: Chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans and rolls. We will also serve cake, tea, water and lemonade. Director of Veterans from UH Downtown will have the event recorded and put onto DVDs. The event will take place on Wednesday, November 9 at 11am. 7. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Thanksgiving Potluck: Everyone will be asked to bring a side dish and dessert. The event will be from 11am -1pm on November 17. 8. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Fashion Show: Monday, November 28 at 11am, we will host a fashion show. We will have 8-10 seniors’ model clothing from Bon Worth and jewelry from Premier Designs. Finger foods will be served. 9. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Budget and Purchasing: Things purchased for the center included, scale for workout room, two chairs, two 8 foot benches for outside, double door display board for outside, kitchen supplies and a camera. 10. Report from Recreation Coordinator: The new bus is estimated to arrive in early spring. 11. Comments made by the Public 12. Comments made by the Committee Members: Computers need to be updated on the ABC Room. 13.
