HomeMy WebLinkAboutSCAC Minutes 2011-04-12 RegularREGULAR MEETING Senior Citizens Advisory Committee April 12, 2011 Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee, which was held at the Activity Building in Meeting Room D at 9:01 a.m. on April 12, 2011 with all board members present, constitutes a quorum: Committee Members: Mr. Paul Gordner, Chair Ms. Jill Musser, Vice Chair Ms. Ginger Spade, Regular Member Ms. Rae McMullen, Regular Member Ms. Frankie Santoro, Regular Member Ms. Sharon Richardson, Regular Member Ms. Dorothy Montz, Regular Member Staff/ Liaison: Michael Boyett, Senior Program Coordinator The following items were discussed: 1. Mr. Paul Gordner called the meeting to order at 9:01am. 2. The invocation was given by Ms. Rae McMullen. 3. The March 8, 2011 minutes were approved. 4. Upcoming trips and events for the month of May include: a. Monday, May 1st is a planned Wal-Mart trip. Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011, we plan to go Centennial Park for a Senior Fish. We will leave the building at 10:30am and return around 1:00pm. This is a free event and hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and drinks will be available at no cost. We will take a trip Clear Lake on Friday, May 6th, 2011 for the Greek Festival. We will leave the Activity Building at 10:30am and plan to return around 3:00pm. There is no charge for the transportation. Lunch is on your own. On Thursday, May 12th, 2011, we will visit the Coushatta Casino Resort, in Louisiana. Community We will depart the Center at 8am and return the same day at 8pm. The cost is just $10.00 per person and lunch is on your own at the casino. On Friday, May 27th 2011 we will return to the Pasadena Opry, in Pasadena, Texas. We will leave the center at 6:30pm and return around 10:30pm. The cost is $15.00 per person. b. This month’s Birthday Social will be Monday, May 9th, 2011 at 12:30pm. A Wii bowling tournament will take place on Wednesday, May 11th, 2011 at 1:00pm in the ABC room. Rose LaBarbera will be a guest speaker on Wednesday, May 18th, 2011 from 12:00pm-12:30pm. There will be a Sundae Social on Thursday May 19th at 1pm sponsored by Debra Bell. On Wednesday, May 25th, we will have bingo beginning at 1pm. 5. There will be a Cinco de Mayo celebration at the center on Thursday, May 5th, 2011. We will serve enchiladas, tamales, rice, beans, salsa, and chips. The event is sponsored by JSCU, along with Paul and Angie Castillo of LaCasita Mexican restaurant. Irma and Luis Trevino will provide entertainment during this event from 12:00pm-1:00pm. Lisa Miller Zumba Gold instructor will also entertain during this event. 6. The Friendswood Activity Building will be closed for Memorial Day on Monday, May 30th, 2011. 7. Two new classes will be making their debut in the month of May. There will be a new Jewelry Making Class hosted by Emmett Jackson of Friendswood. The class will teach how to make Cavochom into coveted stones such as opal, jade, quartz, agate, and jasper. The class will be taught beginning Monday, May 2nd, and will last 4 weeks. A new Embroidery Class will begin on Tuesday, May 10th, 2011 from 1:00pm-3:00pm and will be taught by Mel Hutchinson. The materials will cost about $35.00 for this 6 week class. 8. It was decided by the committee that only 3 people would be needed instead of 6 to make the monthly Wal-Mart trip. 9. Report from the Recreation Coordinator: Construction of the new main floor would be in May. Michael Boyett indicated that the cost approved for the floor would be around $39,000. He said that we might go with a less expensive route to stain the floor, but mentioned that variations of color cannot be controlled. The new bus is still in the approval process with no time table to be approved. Once approved, it would take about 3 months for delivery. The search for the Assistant Senior Manager has been narrowed down to 4 applicants. A choice will be made soon. 10. Comments made by the Public: N/A. 11.
