REGULAR MEETING
Senior Citizens Advisory Committee
November 13, 2012
Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee,
this was held at the Activity Building in Meeting Room D at 9:00 a.m. on
November 13, 2012 with all board members present, constitutes a quorum:
Committee Members:
Mr. Paul Gordner, Chair
Ms. Jill Musser, Vice Chair
Ms. Rae McMullan, Regular Member
Ms. Frankie Santoro, Regular Member
Ms. Dorothy Montz, Regular Member
Ms. Irma Trevino, Regular Member
Mr. Art Lizza, Regular Member
Staff/ Liaison:
Michael Boyett, Senior Program Coordinator
Genie Balderaz, Senior Program Manager
Jamie Eubanks, Assistant Senior Program Manger
The following items were discussed:
1. Mr. Paul Gordner called the meeting to order at 9:04am.
2. The invocation was given by Ms. Rae McMullan.
3. The October 9, 2012 minutes were approved.
4. Upcoming trips and events for the month of October include:
a. On Monday, December 3, 2012 we will take our monthly trip to
Wal Mart, from 12:30-1:30pm. We will visit the Wortham
Theater on Wednesday, December 5, 2012 for a Holiday
Celebration. We will leave at 10:30am and return at 2:00pm;
the cost is $10 per person and a box lunch will be provided. On
Thursday, December 6, 2012 we will take a trip to Dickinson
for the Festival of Lights tour. This is a free trip; we will leave
the building at 6:00pm and return at 10:00pm. On Friday,
December 7, 2012 we will head to The Purple Box Theater to
see a play, Neighborhood Noel. We will leave around 7:00pm
and return at 10:00pm. The cost of the trip is $15 per person.
On Tuesday, December 18, 2012 we will take our monthly trip
to the Terrace at Clear Lake for Lunch and Bingo. We will
leave the building at 12pm and return at 2pm, this is a free trip.
On Wednesday, December 19, 2012 we are going to Harwin for
a shopping trip. We will leave at 9:00am and return at 3:00pm.
The cost is $5 per person and lunch on your own at Chili’s.
b. On Wednesday, December 5, 2012 we will have guest speaker,
Carry Peacock, talk about Long Term Senior Care from 12:00 –
12:30pm. On Monday, December 10, 2012 Apostle Home
Health will be giving free blood pressure checks from 12:30 –
1:30pm. On Monday, December 10, 2012 we will have our
monthly birthday social from 12:30 – 1:30pm. On Wednesday,
December 12, 2012 we will have guest speaker, Misty Fox
from Nautical Insurance Brokers, talk about Medicare, from
12:30 – 1:00pm. On Wednesday, December 12,2012 we will
have our monthly Wii bowling tournament from 1:00 –
3:00pm. On Thursday, December13, 2012 we will have our
annual Christmas Potluck from 11:00am – 1:00pm and
entertainment from Over the Hill Gang. On Thursday,
December 20, 2012 we will have entertainment from the
Designated Drivers, they will be singing Christmas Songs, from
1:00 – 3:00pm; popcorn, cookies and punch will be served. On
Wednesday, December 26, 2012 we will have bingo from 1:00
– 3:00pm, sponsored by Apostle Home Health.
5. Report on the Fall Picnic: Great event with 90 people in attendance.
6. Report on Health Fair: There were over 120 people in attendance.
We had more vendors than there were in 2011.Great feedback from
attendees and vendors.
7. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Christmas Potluck: The
event will take place on Thursday, December 1, 2012 at the Activity
Building. Lunch will be served from 111:00am – 12:00pm and we
will have entertainment from 12:00pm – 1:00pm from over the hill
gang. We will also have Mr. and Mrs. Santa.
8. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Budget and Purchasing:
Read and Reviewed.
9. Discussion and possible actions of Committee Recommendation
Procedures: The current procedures: staff looks over applicant,
brings recommendations to the chair, and then there is approval by
council. Several committee members expressed that no changes need
to be made, “things are fine the way they are.” Staff recommended a
voting consensus. The members agreed that all committee members
should be active members of the center and that the alternate moves
directly into a vacant position. Members discussed bringing in all
applications, having committee review and discuss each applicant and
then make recommendation. The item was tabled until next meeting.
10. Report from Recreation Coordinator: The awning side was finished,
the bus is working well. A new treadmill will be purchased this
month.
11. Comments made by the Public: There have been complaints that the
community service workers have been on their cell phones while
working. Cell phones should be turned in when their shift begins.
12. Comments made by the Committee Members: Committee members
would like to see a beginner Wii class.
13. Adjournment at 10: 00 am.
