HomeMy WebLinkAboutSCAC Minutes 2012-09-11 Regular REGULAR MEETING Senior Citizens Advisory Committee September 11, 2012 Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee, this was held at the Activity Building in Meeting Room D at 9:00 a.m. on September 11, 2012 with all board members present, constitutes a quorum: Committee Members: Ms. Jill Musser, Vice Chair Ms. Rae McMullan, Regular Member Ms. Frankie Santoro, Regular Member Ms. Irma Trevino, Regular Member Mr. Art Lizza, Regular Member Ms. Mary Leal, Regular Member Staff/ Liaison: Michael Boyett, Senior Program Coordinator Genie Balderaz, Senior Program Manager Jamie Eubanks, Assistant Senior Program Manger The following items were discussed: 1. Ms. Jill Musser called the meeting to order at 9:06am. 2. The invocation was given by Ms. Rae McMullan. 3. The August 14, 2012 minutes were approved. 4. Upcoming trips and events for the month of October include: a. On Monday, October 1 we will take our monthly trip to Wal Mart from 12:30 – 1:30pm, free trip. Wednesday, October 3 we will head to the Wortham Theater for A Little Day Music. The cost is $10 per person and we will leave at 10:00am and return at 2:30pm. Lunch will be provided. On Tuesday, October 16, we will head to The Terrace at Clear Lake for Lunch and Bingo; we will leave at 12:00pm and return at 2:00pm. This is a free trip. On Thursday, October 18, we will have an HP1 trip to the Funeral Museum, the cost is $10 per person and lunch on your own at the Potatoe Patch. We will leave at 9:00am and return at 3:00pm. On Thursday, October 25, we will go to lunch at T-Bone Toms, the cost is $5 per person; we will leave the building at 10:30am and return at 2:00pm. b. On Wednesday, October 3 and Wednesday October 10 we will have guest speakers from Harris County Area Agency on Aging talking on the topic of Matter of Balance; they will be here from 10:00am – 12:00pm. On Wednesday, October 10 we will have guest speaker Misty Fox, Nautical Insurance Brokers talking about Medicare from 12:30 – 1:00pm. On Wednesday, October 10 we will have our Wii Bowling Tournament from 1:00 – 3:00pm, sponsored by Misty Fox, Nautical Insurance Brokers. On Thursday, October 11 we will have our Annual Fall Picnic from 11:00am – 1:00pm in Stevenson Park; this event is sponsored by Jeter Memorial Funeral Home. On Monday, October 15 we will have our monthly Birthday Social from 12:30 – 1:30pm. On Wednesday, October 17, we will have Flu Shot Immunizations from 10:00am – 12:00pm; bring your Medicare card or $20. On Wednesday, October 17 guest speaker, Sharon Mitchiner from Galveston County will do have a follow up on the September Educational Series and Lessons; 12:00 – 1:00pm. On Monday, October 22, we will have guest speaker Sally Godfrey from Lonestar Legal Aid preparing Wills from 11:00 – 2:00pm. On Wednesday, October 22 guest speaker Michael Podulka from Medicare Pulse will talk about Medicare, from 12:00 – 12:30pm. On Tuesday, October 23 we will have our annual Health Fair from 10:00am – 1:00pm at the Activity Building. On Tuesday, October 23 and Wednesday, October 24, from 9:00am – 3:00pm, Janice Frankie will be giving massages. On Monday, October 29 we will have a lunch and fun from 11:00am – 1:00pm sponsored by Renee Langdon, State Farm. On Tuesday, October 30 we will have picture day, by Kim’s Studio from 10:00am – 12:00pm. The will be giving a discount to the seniors on picture packages. On Wednesday, October 31 we will have Bingo from 12:00 – 1:00pm sponsored by JoAnn Cormier, Apostle Home Health. 5. Report on the Casino Extravaganza: Great turnout with 200 seniors in attendance. Might consider adding more casino tables and eliminating the dancing. Members heard all positive comments about the event. 6. Discussion and possible action regarding the Fall Picnic: The fall picnic will take place on Thursday, October 11 from 11:00am – 1:00pm at Stevenson Park. Hot dogs, beans, chips, desserts and drinks will be served. This event is sponsored by Jeter Memorial Funeral Home. 7. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Health Fair: The health fair will be on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 from 10:00am – 1:00pm. In the process of following up with the vendors that we have faxed information to. As last year, we will have sandwiches, chips and drinks for the vendors. Vendors are asked to bring a door prize. 8. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Veterans Luncheon: The Veterans Day luncheon will be on Wednesday, November 7 from 11:00am to 2:30pm. The location of the event will be at the Hanger. 9. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Budget and Purchasing: Read and Reviewed. The committee decided to purchase more square tables, projection screen, cotton candy machine and a snow cone machine. 10. Report from Recreation Coordinator: The new side walk is completed on the side of the building. The awning project will start once a windstorm certificate is received. 11. Comments made by the Public: None 12. Comments made by the Committee Members: The exercise room needs a new treadmill. 13.
