REGULAR MEETING
Senior Citizens Advisory Committee
August 14, 2012
Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee,
this was held at the Activity Building in Meeting Room D at 9:00 a.m. on
August 14, 2012 with all board members present, constitutes a quorum:
Committee Members:
Mr. Paul Gordner, Chair
Ms. Jill Musser, Vice Chair
Ms. Rae McMullan, Regular Member
Ms. Dorothy Montz, Regular Member
Ms. Frankie Santoro, Regular Member
Ms. Irma Trevino, Regular Member
Ms. Mary Leal, Regular Member
Staff/ Liaison:
Deirdre Brown, Council Liaison
Michael Boyett, Senior Program Coordinator
Genie Balderaz, Senior Program Manager
Jamie Eubanks, Assistant Senior Program Manger
The following items were discussed:
1. Mr. Paul Gordner called the meeting to order at 9:06am.
2. The invocation was given by Ms. Rae McMullan.
3. The July 10, 2012 minutes were approved.
4. Upcoming trips and events for the month of July include:
a. On Monday, September 10th we will eat breakfast at Joe’s BBQ
and go shopping at Froberg’s Farm. The trip is $5 per person;
we will leave at 8:30am and return around 12:00pm. Breakfast
on your own at Joe’s. On Tuesday, September 18th we will take
our monthly trip to the Terrace at Clear Lake for Lunch &
Bingo. This is a free trip; we will leave the building at
12:00pm and return at 2:00pm. On Thursday, September 20th
we will take a trip to the American Cowboy Museum, we will
leave at 10:00am and return at 3:00pm. The trip is $10 per
person and lunch on your own at Just Oxtails. On Wednesday,
September 26 we will take an HP1 bus to Richmond to visit the
George Ranch Historical Park. We will leave here at 8:30am
and return at 4:00pm. The trip is $15 person and we will
provide a box lunch.
b. We will have guest speaker Teresa Martinez, Harris County
Area Agency on Aging, talk about Matter of Balance for 8
weeks, from 10:00am – 12:00pm. She will be here Wednesday,
September 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th. Sharon Mitchiner, Galveston
County will be our guest speaker to give an Educational Series
and Lessons. She will be here from 12:00pm – 1:00pm on
Wednesday, September 5th, 12th, and 19th. On Thursday,
September 6th we will have a Grandparents Day Social from
1:00 – 2:00pm, sponsored by Donnie Johnson at House Calls
Home Health. On Monday, September 10th we will have our
monthly birthday social from 12:30 – 1:00pm, sponsored by
Lena Gilley, At Your Side Home Care. On Wednesday,
September 12th we will have our monthly Wii Bowling from
1:00 – 3:00pm, sponsored by Misty Fox of Nautical Insurance
Brokers. On Thursday, September 13th we will have a guest
speaker from 12:00 – 12:30pm, Velanie Turner, of Vitas
Hospice Care to talk about Volunteer Opportunities. On
Monday, September 17th we will have a Citizen’s Day Lunch &
Fun from 11:00 – 1:00pm. We will be serving chicken gumbo
over rice with crackers, desserts and drinks. This event is
sponsored by Susan Cavender of Gardens at Friendswood
Lakes. On Tuesday, September 25th we will have Free Hearing
and Optical Screenings from 10:00am – 12:00pm, sponsored by
Sam’s Club. On Wednesday, September 26th we will have our
monthly bingo game from 1:00 – 3:00pm, sponsored by JoAnn
Cormier of Apostle Home Health. Thursday, September 27th
we will host our first annual Christmas in September from
10:00am - 2:00pm in the Activity Building.
5. Report on the Watermelon Bash & Bingo: Great turnout, with over
80 seniors in attendance. There were a lot of compliments about the
fruit that was served.
6. Discussion and possible action regarding Lunch & Fun: We will be
serving chicken gumbo, with desserts and drinks. This event is
sponsored by Susan Cavender of Gardens at Friendswood Lakes. The
event is on Monday, September 17, 2012 from 11:00am – 1:00pm.
7. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Christmas in
September: The event will be on Thursday, September 27, 2012 from
10:00am – 2:00pm. As of today we have 17 vendors.
8. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Budget and Purchasing:
Read and Reviewed.
9. Report from Recreation Coordinator: The awning was approved, C-
Link will be doing the project, and it will take one week to complete
the project. Also the sidewalk was performed in house by our own
Public Works Department for roughly $400.00 dollars. New tables
were ordered for the center.
10. Comments made by the Public: None
11. Comments made by the Committee Members: Jill Musser suggested
that committee members pass out flyers in the community for each
event we host.
12. Adjournment at 9: 30 am.
