HomeMy WebLinkAboutSCAC Minutes 2012-07-10 Regular REGULAR MEETING Senior Citizens Advisory Committee July 10, 2012 Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee, this was held at the Activity Building in Meeting Room D at 9:00 a.m. on July 10, 2012 with all board members present, constitutes a quorum: Committee Members: Mr. Paul Gordner, Chair Ms. Jill Musser, Vice Chair Ms. Rae McMullan, Regular Member Ms. Dorothy Montz, Regular Member Ms. Frankie Santoro, Regular Member Ms. Irma Trevino, Regular Member Staff/ Liaison: Deirdre Brown, Council Liaison Michael Boyett, Senior Program Coordinator Genie Balderaz, Senior Program Manager Jamie Eubanks, Assistant Senior Program Manger The following items were discussed: 1. Mr. Paul Gordner called the meeting to order at 9:03am. 2. The invocation was given by Ms. Rae McMullan. 3. The June 11, 2012 minutes were approved. 4. Upcoming trips and events for the month of July include: a. On Monday, August 6, 2012 we will take our monthly trip to Wal- Mart. We will leave the building at 12:30 and return at 1:30pm. On Wednesday, August 15, 2012 we will head to the 1940 Air Terminal Museum, the cost is $5 per person. We will leave the building at 9:30am and return at 3:00pm, lunch will be on your own at Central Texas BBQ. On Tuesday, August 21, 2012 we will have lunch and play bingo at the Terrace at Clear Lake. This is a free trip; we will leave at 12:00pm and return at 2:00pm. On Tuesday, August 28, 2012 we have an HP1 trip scheduled to head to Huntsville to visit the Texas Prison Museum and the Veterans Museum. We will leave at 8:00am – and return at 4:00pm. The cost is $10 per person and lunch is on your own at Golden Corral. On Wednesday, August 29, 2012 we will head to Gulf Greyhound Park, the cost is $12 per person and it includes a lunch buffet. We will leave the building at 10:30am and return at 4:30pm. b. We will have guest speaker, Dr. Elena Volpi on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at 12:00pm to talk about Muscle Loss and Aging. Misty Fox from Nautical Insurance Brokers (NIB) will be here on Wednesday, August 8, 2012 from 12:00pm to talk about Medicare and You. On Wednesday, August 8, 2012 we will have our monthly Wii Bowling tournament from 1:00 – 3:00pm, sponsored by Misty Fox, (NIB). On Thursday, August 9, 2012 we will have our first annual Tea Party from 12:00 to 1:00pm, sponsored by Hobby Lobby, Charleston Tea Room and Tuesday Morning. On Monday, August 13, 2012 we will have our monthly Birthday Social from 12:30 - 1:00pm. On Tuesday, August 14, 2012 we will have guest speaker Sally Godfrey of Lonestar Legal Aid, at 12:00pm to talk about Wills. She will be back on Thursday, August 16, 2012 at 11:00am to 2:00pm for appointments to prepare your will. On Friday, August 17, 2012 we will have our Annual Casino Extravaganza from 2:00 – 5:00pm. On Thursday, August 23, 2012 at1:00pm we will have a Celebration of Marriage, sponsored by L.T. Gordon on Whitman of the World. On Wednesday, August 29, we will have our monthly Bingo game from 1:00 – 3:00pm, sponsored by JoAnn Cormier of Apostle Home Health. 5. Report on the Fashion Show: There were 80 seniors in attendance. The clothing was provided by BonWorth clothing store and the jewelry was provided by Premier Designs Jewelry. 6. Report on the BBQ Fundraiser: The first annual BBQ Fundraiser was a great success. There were over 130 plates made and $1,177.00 funds raised. 7. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Casino Extravaganza: The event will be on Friday, August 17, 2012 from 2:00 – 5:00pm. Casino Parties Unlimited is providing the tables, which will be include 7 blackjack tables, 1 craps table, 1 roulette table and 2 Texas holdem tables. We will also have DJ Peter Hoth to provide music and dancing. 8. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Celebration of Marriage: This event will be held on Thursday, August 23, 2012 from 1:00 – 2:00pm. Our sponsor is L.T. Gordon, Whitman of the World. We will have cake and punch. 9. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Budget and Purchasing: Read and Reviewed. 10. Report from Recreation Coordinator: There were three quotes received for the awning and the cheapest was from C-Link at $4,408.15. Terry Byrd from the Fire Marshalls office informed us that we may be able to utilize part of a grant to pay for the awning. We are waiting to hear from him, in order to move forward with the purchase. 11. Comments made by the Public: None 12. Comments made by the Committee Members: Jill Musser suggested that committee members pass out flyers in the community for each event we host. 13.
