REGULAR MEETING
Senior Citizens Advisory Committee
August 13, 2013
Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee,
this was held at the Activity Building in Meeting Room D at 9:00 a.m. on
August 13, 2013 with all board members present, constitutes a quorum:
Committee Members:
Mr. Paul Gordner, Chair
Ms. Jill Musser, Vice Chair
Ms. Frankie Santoro, Regular Member
Ms. Rae Powell, Regular Member
Ms. Dorothy Montz, Regular Member
Ms. Irma Trevino, Regular Member
Mr. Art Lizza, Regular Member
Ms. Kay Griffin, Regular Member
Mr. Dennis Rundell, Alternate Member
Staff/ Liaison:
Genie Balderaz, Senior Program Manager
The following items were discussed:
1. Mr. Paul Gordner called the meeting to order at 9:02am.
2. The invocation was given by Ms. Kay Griffin.
3. Dennis Rundell was introduced as the new Alternate Committee
member.
4. The July 9, 2013 minutes were approved.
5. Upcoming trips and events for the month of September include:
a. On Monday, September 9, 2013, from 12:30 – 1:30pm, we will
take our monthly trip to Wal-Mart. On Thursday, September
12, 2013, from 11am – 1pm we will go out to lunch at Justin’s
Seafood in Friendswood. On Wednesday, September 18, 2013
from 9am – 3pm we will visit the Hindu Temple in Stafford;
the cost is $5 per person; lunch on your own at Fuddruckers.
On Thursday, September 26 from 8am – 4pm, we will visit the
Texas Quilt Museum; cost is $10 per person; lunch on your
own at F&H’s Brisket and Brew.
b. On September 4, 11, 18, 25, from 9 – 11am, David Smith from
Houston Galveston Area Council will have a class on Chronic
Disease Self-Management. On Thursday, September 5, 2013
from 1 – 2pm we will have a Grandparents Day Social, we will
serve cake and punch. On Friday, September 6, 2013 from 9am
– 5pm and Saturday, September 7 from 9am – 4pm we will
have our second annual Christmas in September, Arts and
Crafts Market. On Monday, September 9, 2013 we will have
our monthly birthday social from 12:30 – 1:00pm. On
Wednesday, September 11, 2013 we will have our monthly Wii
bowling tournament from 1:00 – 3:00pm sponsored by Misty
Fox of Nautical Insurance Brokers. Also, on Wednesday,
September 11, 2013 we will have a lunch sponsored by LT
Gordon. On Friday, September 13, 2013 Mary Bley, Gardens
at Friendswood Lakes will sponsor a breakfast at the center
from 9:30 – 10:30am. On Monday, September 16, 2013 we
will have a Lunch and Fun from 11am – 1pm. We will serve
bbq, potato salad, and beans, then we will have entertainment
from Young at Heart. On Thursday, September 19, 2013 we
will have an AARP Driver Safety Course from 9:30am –
1:30pm. On Tuesday, September 24, 2013 from 12:00 –
12:30pm we will have guest speaker, Charles Hanby from
Bankers Life and Casualty Company to talk about changes in
Medicare and long term care. On Wednesday, September 25,
2013 we will have our monthly game of bingo from 1:00 –
3:00pm sponsored by Apostle Home Health.
6. Christmas in September will take place on Friday, September 6, 2013
from 9:00am – 5:00pm and Saturday, September 7, 2013 from 9:00am
– 4:00pm. There is a $75 booth fee for both days. We will have
sandwiches, chips and drinks. As of today, there are 23 vendors.
7. The Watermelon Bash and Bingo was a great turnout. We had many
compliments on the event.
8. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Budget and Purchasing:
Read and Reviewed. The budget expenditures does not reflect the
L’auberge Casino trip money that will be taken out, that cost will be
$1,550.00. The committee would like to see one shelf for books on
the back wall. There needs to be a higher toilet in the front women’s
restroom, in the non-handicap stall. We will look into a unisex
shower in the back restroom by Genies office. Need a garbage can in
the restroom stall. The sliding door tracks need to be cleaned or
replaced.
9. Report from Recreation Coordinator: The Friendswood Connection
phone line is still up and running, would the committee want to take
responsibility of the phone line. The committee would be in charge
of the phone. We would do bus runs for doctor visits twice a month.
The committee voted against taking over the Friendswood Connection
phone line.
10. Comments made by the Public: none
11. Comments made by the Committee Members: Trip Ideas: Breakfast
at Joe’s BBQ, Port of Houston Boat Tour, Metrorail – Lunch at
Spaghetti Warehouse, Pearland Movie Theater.
