Senior Citizens Advisory Committee
October 14, 2014
Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee,
this was held at the Activity Building in Meeting Room D at 9:00 a.m. on
October 14, 2014 with all board members present, constitutes a quorum:
Committee Members:
Mr. Paul Gordner, Chair
Ms. Jill Musser, Vice Chair
Ms. Rae McMullan, Regular Member
Ms. Frankie Santoro, Regular Member
Mr. Art Lizza, Regular Member
Ms. Dorothy Montz, Regular Member
Ms. Kay Griffin, Regular Member
Mr. Dennis Rundell, Alternate Member
Staff/ Liaison:
Genie Balderaz, Senior Program Manager
Jamie Eubanks, Assistant Senior Program Manager
Michael Boyett, Recreation Superintendent
The following items were discussed:
1. Mr. Paul Gordner called the meeting to order at 9:00am.
2. The invocation was given by Ms. Kay Griffin.
3. The September 16, 2014 minutes were approved.
4. Upcoming trips and events for the month of November include:
a. On Monday, November 3, 2014 we will take our monthly trip
to Wal Mart from 12:30 to 1:30pm. On Tuesday, November 4,
2014 we will visit Hope Village, have lunch and shop; we will
leave the building at 10:45am and this is a free trip. On
Monday, November 17, 2014 we will have breakfast at Joe’s
BBQ and go shopping at Frobergs Farm; we will leave the
building at 8:30am and return around 12:00pm; cost is $5 per
person and breakfast is on your own.
b. On Wednesday, November 5, 2014 we will have our 5th Annual
Veterans Day Luncheon from 11:00am – 1:00pm at the
Leavesely Park Hangar. On Thursday, November 6, 2014 we
will have the AARP Driver Safety Course from 9:30am –
1:30pm; cost is $15 for AARP Members and $20 for Non
AARP Members. On Thursday, November 6, 2014 the
Friendswood Health Care Center will be giving free Blood
Pressure Checks from 1:00 – 3:00pm. On Monday, November
10, 2014 we will have our Birthday Social from 12:30 –
1:00pm. On Wednesday, November 12, 2014 we will have our
Wii Bowling Tournament from 1:00 – 3:00pm, sponsored by
Nautical Insurance Brokers. On Thursday, November 13, 2014
we will have our annual Thanksgiving Potluck from 11:00am –
1:00pm, sponsored by Jeter Memorial Funeral Home. On
Wednesday, November 19, 2014 we will have Officer Kevin
Crouch from the Friendswood Police Department come and talk
about Holiday Safety from 12:00 – 1:00pm. On Wednesday,
November 19 from 1:00 – 2:00pm we will have Arts & Crafts,
cost is $5 per person. On Thursday, November 20, 2014 we
will have our Volunteer Dinner from 6:30 – 8:30pm. On
Wednesday, November 26, 2014 we will have our monthly
game of bingo from 1:00 – 3:00pm, sponsored by Apostle
Home Health.
5. Discussion and possible action regarding the Veterans Luncheon: the
Luncheon will take place on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at the
Leavsely Park Hangar from 11am – 1pm. We will have lunch catered
by Stefanos, which include spaghetti, salad and bread. H-E-B is
sponsoring 3 cakes, cookies, tea and water. Frankie is working on the
Veteran speakers.
6. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Thanksgiving Potluck:
The Thanksgiving Potluck will take place on Thursday, November 13,
2014 from 11am – 1pm. The event is sponsored by Jeter Memorial
Funeral Home. We will serve turkey, ham, dressing, and rolls. We
are asking that everyone sign up to bring a dessert or side dish. After
lunch we will have entertainment from Young at Heart.
7. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Volunteer Dinner: The
Volunteer Dinner will take place on Thursday, November 20, 2014
from 6:30 – 8:30pm. Food sponsored by Justin’s Seafood.
8. Report on the Fall Picnic: We had a great turnout; everyone enjoyed
the hamburgers, chips and bingo.
9. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Budget and Purchasing:
Read and Reviewed. The Bluebonnet organization will be meeting
this Saturday, October 18, 2014 to present the Senior Citizen Program
with a check to purchase the projector and projector screen. The
advisory committee shirts will be in this week.
10. Report from Recreation Superintendent: The community service
department is hiring a part time position and taking applications for
the Recreation Manager position.
11. Comments made by the Public: Need follow up on the broken
treadmill. The glass sliding doors are still difficult to open, they
tracks need to be cleaned, oiled and/or straightened.
12. Comments made by the Committee Members: None
13. Adjournment at 9:58 am.
