REGULAR MEETING
Senior Citizens Advisory Committee
April 8, 2014
Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee,
this was held at the Activity Building in Meeting Room D at 9:00 a.m. on
April 8, 2014 with all board members present, constitutes a quorum:
Committee Members:
Mr. Paul Gordner, Chair
Ms. Jill Musser, Vice Chair
Ms. Frankie Santoro, Regular Member
Mr. Art Lizza, Regular Member
Ms. Dorothy Montz, Regular Member
Ms. Kay Griffin, Regular Member
Ms. Irma Trevino, Regular Member
Mr. Dennis Rundell, Alternate Member
Staff/ Liaison:
Genie Balderaz, Senior Program Manager
Jamie Eubanks, Assistant Senior Program Manager
The following items were discussed:
1. Mr. Paul Gordner called the meeting to order at 9:00am.
2. The invocation was given by Ms. Kay Griffin.
3. The March 11, 2014 minutes were approved.
4. Upcoming trips and events for the month of May include:
a. On Friday, May 9, 2014 we will take a free trip to the Clear
Lake Greek Festival, we will leave the building at 9am and
return at 3pm; lunch is on your own. On Monday, May 12,
2014 we will take our monthly trip to Wal Mart; we will leave
the building at 12:30pm and return at 1:30pm. On Tuesday,
May 20, 2014 we will take a trip to Coushatta Casino; we will
leave the building at 8:00am and return at 8:00pm, cost is $10
per person. On Thursday, May 22, 2014 we will attend the
Galveston County Health Fair in League City, cost is free, and
we will leave the building at 9:30am and return at 1:30pm. We
will take a trip to Galveston to the Pier 21 Theater on Thursday,
May 29, 2014, to see A Great Storm, cost is $10 per person, and
we will leave the building at 9:30am and return at 3:00pm;
lunch is on your own at Joe’s Crabshack.
b. On Monday, May5, 2014 we will have our annual Cinco de
Mayo celebration from 11:00am – 1:00pm. There will be
entertainment from Jerry Saucier; this event is sponsored by
JSC Federal Credit Union and La Casita. Tuesday, May 6,
2014 we will have on annual Senior Fish at Centennial Park
from 10:30am – 1:00pm; the event is sponsored by Alton Todd
Law Firm. On Wednesday, May 7, 2014 we will have Guest
Speaker Sally Kerns of Kerns Law Firm to speak about Last
Will and Testament from 12:00 – 1:00pm. On Monday, May
12, 2014 we will have our monthly birthday social from 12:30 –
1:00pm. On Wednesday, May 14, 2014 we will have our
monthly Wii Bowling Tournament from 1:00 – 3:00pm;
sponsored by Misty Fox, Nautical Insurance Brokers. On
Thursday, May 15, 2014 we will have a sundae social from
1:00 – 2:00pm sponsored by Susan Cavender of Gardens at
Friendswood Lakes. On Wednesday, May 28, 2014 we will
have our monthly bingo game from 1:00 – 3:00pm, sponsored
by Apostle Home Health.
5. Discussion and possible actions regarding Cinco de Mayo: Monday,
May 5, 2014 from 11:00am to 1:00pm. We will serve enchiladas, rice
beans, tamales, salsa and chips. We will have entertainment from
Jerry Saucier. This event is sponsored by JSC Federal Credit Union.
6. Discussion and possible action regarding Senior Fish: Tuesday, May
6, 2014 from 10:30 – 1:00pm. We will serve hot dogs, hamburgers,
chips, ice cream and drinks. The buns and condiments will be
donated by Pete Garcia of Sonic, the ice cream is donated by Apostle
Home Health and Alton Todd is sponsoring $400.
7. Report on the Spaghetti Fundraiser: We raised $593. Next year we
will distribute flyers to churches, banks, and local businesses. This
was Joe Debonis’ last year to cook for the luncheon. We will explore
options for the spaghetti.
8. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Budget and Purchasing:
Read and Reviewed.
9. Report from Recreation Superintendent: None
10. Comments made by the Public: None
11. Comments made by the Committee Members: The piano was tuned
for the upcoming lunch and fun. The wet towels were replaced in the
exercise room and it was also cleaned. Researched a fishing trip and
we will see if there is any interest. A heater was ordered for Room D.
12. Adjournment at 9:25 am.
