MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE FRIENDSWOOD SENIOR CITIZENS
ADVISORY BOARD THAT WAS HELD ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2019, AT 09:00
AM AT FRIENDSWOOD ACTIVITY BUILDING, 416 MORNINGSIDE DRIVE,
FRIENDSWOOD, TEXAS, WITH THE FOLLOWING PRESENT CONSTITUTING A

1. Call to Order
Committee Vice Chair Nancy Mastrofrancesco called the meeting to order at 9:03
am.
2. Invocation
The invocation was given by Committee Member Doris Ochoa.
3. Communications from the Public
Councilmember Robert J. Griffon gave the board members an update on bond
proposal results after the November 5 elections. Results showed Friendswood
citizen support for public safety, the Fire Department, flooding issues and Public
Works. Proposals regarding Road infrastructure, Parks and a new Community
Center did not pass.
4. Approval of Minutes
A. October 8, 2019 Meeting Minutes
Committee Member David O’Brien moved to approve the October 8, 2019
meeting minutes as presented and it was seconded by Committee Member
Doris Ochoa.
5. Discussion of Possible Actions
A. Upcoming Trips and Events
Assistant Senior Program Manager Shadey Caraveo-Saldaña stated that the
December trips offered are as follows: Monday, December 2, 2019, Walmart,
9:30 am – 11:30 am; Wednesday, December 4, 2019, Dazzle & Glamour
Fashion Show with Village on the Park, 9:30 am – 1:00 pm; Thursday,
December 5, 2019, Bay Area Houston Ballet & Theatre: The Nutcracker, 9:00
am – 3:00 pm, $12 per person, Lunch on your own at Olive Garden;
Thursday, December 12, 2019, George HW Bush Library & Museum, 9:00 am
– 4:30 pm, $10 per person, Lunch on your own at Cotton Patch Café;
Monday, December 16, 2019, Lunch & Bingo at Village on the Park, 9:30 am
– 12:30 pm; Tuesday, December 17, 2019, Bingo at Encompass Rehab
Hospital, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, Lunch on your own at Cracker Barrel;
Wednesday, December 18, 2019, Christmas Lights in River Oaks Tour, 4:30
pm – 9:00 pm, $5 per person, Lunch on your own at Torchy’s Tacos.
Assistant Senior Program Manager stated that the December events offered
are as follows Monday, December 2, 2019, Breakfast Donuts, 9:00 am – 9:30
am, Sponsored by South Region Driving School; Monday, December 2, 2019,
Crafting with Brandy, 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm, $10 per person; Tuesday,
December 3, 2019, Marian’s Red Hats, 10:30 am – 11:30 am; Monday,
December 9, 2019, Bingo, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm, Sponsored by Linda Richard;
Friday, December 13, 2019, Essential Oils with Brandy: Linen Spray and Lip
Balms, 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm, $10 per person; Monday, December 16, 2019,
Breakfast Tacos, 9:15 am – 9:45 am; Monday, December 16, 2019, Crafting
with Brandy, 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm, $10 per person; Wednesday, December 18,
2019, Bingo, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm; Thursday, December 19, 2019, Breakfast
with Santa, 9:30 am – 11:30 am, Sponsored by Whataburger, Performance
by Marian’s Cloggers; Monday, December 30, 2019, Movie Matinee: Scent of
a Woman, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Assistant Senior Program Manager stated that the December facility closures
are as follows Tuesday, December 24, 2019 and Wednesday, December 25,
2019, Christmas Eve & Christmas
Committee Member Doris Ochoa expressed concern over the pricing and
quality of product offered at the Crafting with Brandy class. Assistant Senior
Program Manager stated that Brandy offered her services during a time slot
where nothing was being offered. She was given the opportunity, hoping to
spark some interest from some participants, however the class will only be
offered through the end of the year, due to lack of interest.
B. Budget and Purchasing
Senior Citizen Program Manager Genie Balderaz presented that as of
November the 8, 2019:
Friendswood Senior Citizen Budget
Revenue Received $3100.00
Expenditures $1102.91
Funds Available $1997.09
C. Breakfast with Santa
The Senior Citizen Program Manager stated that Breakfast with Santa is
scheduled for Thursday, December 19, 2019 from 9:30 am to 11:30 am.
Whataburger will be sponsoring breakfast taquitos, orange juice and
cinnamon rolls, and Brothers Produce will be sponsoring fruit. She also stated
that Friendswood Senior Citizen Program participants Mick and Kathryn Culp
would be Santa and Mrs. Claus and would be available for pictures.
Entertainment will be provided by Marian’s Cloggers.
D. Thanksgiving Potluck
The Senior Citizen Program Manager stated that the Thanksgiving Potluck is
scheduled for Thursday, November 21, 2019 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.
Jeters Memorial Funeral Home is sponsoring food from Kelley’s. Noula’s
tappers will perform from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm.
6. Reports
A. Veteran’s Luncheon Report
The Senior Citizen Program Manager reported that there was a lot of positive
feedback with over 150 people in attendance. It was also noted that more
salad should be ordered for next year since it was the only item that ran out
during the event. The Clear Brook ROTC has confirmed that they will attend
the 2020 event.
Assistant Director Michael Boyett listed a few items to improve for next year’s
event such as, discussing a date with the Friendswood Chamber of
Commerce to avoid the events overlapping, purchasing more drape for the
stage backdrop, and not playing Taps at the end of the program.
B. Assistant Director’s Report
The Assistant Director Michael Boyett stated that there are other ideas on the
table on ways to expand the community center such as relocating to soon to
be vacated Cline Elementary. There would have to be a lot of remodeling but
there is a lot of space to work with.
7. Comments
Committee Member Vickie Hefner mentioned that purchasing the electric leaf blower
has been beneficial.
Vice Chair mentioned she would like the Senior Citizen Program to help the
Friendswood Police Department with their Community Toy Drive. All committee
members felt it was a great idea and a flyer will be posted with the suggested items
and a box where the seniors can drop off the toys. Committee Vice Chair and
Committee Member Mona Palmer will talk to Lisa Price for more information on ways
the Senior Citizen Program can help.
8. Adjournment
Committee Member Mona Palmer move to adjourn the meeting and several others
seconded. This meeting was adjourned at 9:44 am.
