Ms. Charlene Mizener explained to the group that the Pasadena Opry will be attended by a group of Friendswood Seniors, even though it wasn’t being advertised on the newsletter. Genie Balderaz explained that for special shows, the Hometown Opry does not give the City refunds for purchased tickets that end up not being used. e. Genie Balderaz mentioned that, after receiving a lot of positive feedback about the Alvin Opry, this will now be regular activity each month 5. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Budget and Purchasing: a. Ms. Nancy Mastrofrancesco brought to the attention of the committee members that surplus funds accumulated through sponsorships, fundraisers, or through the senior citizens’ trips would be rolled over to the City’s general fund. The Friendswood Senior Citizen Program (FSCP) is budgeted to spend $10,000 on events and trips throughout the fiscal year. Genie Balderaz and Shadey Caraveo-Saldaña will meet with Budget Manager Jennifer Walker on August 14, 2019 to get clarification and advice to make sure these funds stay available for FSCP. b. Since donations surpassed the projected amount for the Casino Extravaganza, Genie Balderaz asked the committee if items such as a flat screen TV or collapsible wagon could be purchased to raffle. Committee members unanimously approved purchase. c. Committee suggested purchasing sturdier chairs. 6. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Christmas in September [Friday & Saturday, September 13 & 14, 2019 – Friday: 9:00 pm – 5:00 pm; Saturday: 9:00 pm – 4:00 pm]: a. The cost for a booth is $75. As of August 13th, 18 vendors had paid and confirmed their participation. The limit for vendors is 20. b. Vendors are allowed to come on Thursday, August 12th in the afternoon to set up their booths for Friday morning. c. A light lunch will be available for the vendors on Friday. 7. Report from the Assistant Director: a. Assistant Director absent 8. Comments made by the Public: a. Mr. Robert Griffon reported that City Council voted to place a $9.1 million bond for a new community/activity center in the November ballot. Mr. Griffon also offered to attend any HOA, Town Hall, Rotary, or Chamber of Commerce meetings or events to promote, advocate and educate others on this bond. i. City funds or employees cannot be used to promote the bond. b. Ms. Nancy Mastrofrancesco said she could set up a table at the health fair to answer questions regarding the bond as well as other voting information. 9. Comments made by the Committee Members: a. Ms. Nancy Mastrofrancesco passed around a worksheet for the committee members to outline how they preferred to be contacted. This was done in an attempt to better communicate/relay important information amongst all members. b. Dennis Rundell asked members for suggestions on noise level due to activities being scheduled at similar times and more people that have joined the center. Committee members suggested being cognizant when scheduling events, given the increased member turnout to the current scheduled event. The committee acknowledged that this is a wonderful predicament to be facing. c. David O’Brien mentioned that a participant had asked for a ping pong table. He told her that if she managed to get more people interested, then it would be something the committee could discuss. i. Genie Balderaz said that there had been a ping pong table in the past but it didn’t get used very much. 10. Adjournment at 10:01am.
