RE: 4th of July
Status Report
The 4th of July Steering Committee met on Thursday, March 7,
1985 at the Public Works Building. The committee would like
to recommend to Council the following:
THEME
"UNITY THROUGH SERVICE -- HONORING OUR VOLUNTEERS"
GRAND MARSHAL
In keeping with the theme, the committee suggested a float
of organization selected volunteers be the Grand Marshal.
Each volunteer organization in Friendswood would be con-
tacted to select their honored volunteer. The volunteer
would be in uniform during the celebration. At the opening
ceremonies, all volunteers would be recognized and awarded
for their service to the community.
The 4th of July Steering Committee addressed the following
items:
THE GATHERING: BEN MALEK, CHAIRMAN. AND CHOICE KINCHEN
Concern was expressed over the number of people that at-
tended this event. To reduce that number it was suggested

"immediate family only" be on the invitation. The invitation
should be placed in city employee's paycheck (Donna). Lynn
Chatham and Evelyn Newman will send invitations to Council
Members and Ben Malek to the people who make donations.
THE PARADE LINE-UP: BEN MALEK, CHAIRMAN. AND RAVE ZWINGMAN
The Knights of Columbus will be responsible for the directing
of the parade. The Squires will hand out small flags. More
flags are needed this year. Donna will make entry forms and
send confirmation letter upon receipt. The entries should
be catagorized for line up by organizations i.e. religious,
commercial, youth groups, etc.
BICYCLE CONTEST
This event is to be held in the back parking lot of the Com-
munity National Bank after permission is obtained. Donna will
order ribbons, establish rules of order, provide judges.
BROCHURES: PAUL FRONCZEK, CHAIRMAN
Included in the discussion was to make the brochure one fold
larger, add "90th year", change photos, change front to the
three flags sketch by Barry Gray, inquire as to cost and pos-
sibly obtaining a picture of last years flag raising for use
in the brochure.
BOOTH SPACE RENTAL: LYNN CHATHAM, CHAIRMAN
T-SHIRT SALES: JANET SOBEY, CHAIRMAN
The shirt sale needs to begin earlier in the year enabling
a larger profit. Check into ordering the same shirt as last
year and a shirt with the three flags emblem on the front.
The order should be doubled that which was ordered last year,
as well as the cap order.
BREAKFAST:
The Community Appearance Board should be contacted in re-
gards to this. Suggestions made: to have a lighter break-
fast, possibly rolls from Paris Bakery. tO

It was suggested to check on an alternate location for fire-
work display due to state firework regulations.
