BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT REGULAR MEETING SEPTEMBER 24, 1985
MINUTES OF THE ZONING BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT OF THE CITY OF FRIENDSWOOD THAT WAS HELD ON SEPTEMBER 24, 1985 AT CITY HALL AT 7:00 P.M. WITH THE FOLLOWING PRESENT CONSTITUTING A QUORUM:

CHAIRMAN DYKES CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND APPOINTED STE.VE JOHNSON· AND HOWARD YEAGER TO SERVE AS REGULAR.MEMBERS· FOR THIS MEETING ONLY.
CHAIRMAN DYKES CALLED TO ORDER A PUBLIC HEARING FOR THE PURPOSE OF RECEIVING TESTIMONY FROM INTERESTED PERSONS REGARDING THE REQUEST FROM MARY KUHN OF COLLECTOR'S ALLEY, 624 A ·souTH FRIENDSWOOD DRIVE, STONESTHROW SHOPPING CENTER FOR A VARIANCE TO ADD A SIGN CURRENTLY UNDER THE "GRANDFATHER CLAUSE."
HEARING NO INPUT, CHAIRMAN DYKES CLOSED THE PUBLIC HEARING.
MARY KUHN DREW EXAMPLES OF THE LOCATION OF HER SHOP IN THE SHOPPING CENTER AND ALSO SHOWED THE BOARD A DRAWING OF THE SIGN WHICH ·SHE WOULD LIKE TO DISPLAY. SHE STATED NO ONE KNOWS THAT HER BUSINESS IS LOCATED IN THE CENTER BECAUSE IT IS IN.THE ALLEY AND THE FAR CORNER AND THE SIGN IS TOO SMALL TO SEE FROM PEOPLE PASSING, BY ON THE STREET. SHE IS ASKING FOR A SIGN 36 INCHES HIGH AND 4 INCHES OF THAT IS 2 SUPPORTS.
THERE WAS MUCH DISCUSSION. CHAIRMAN DYKES ASKED FIRE MARSHAL, VANCE RILEY, WHAT .EXACTLY WAS WRONG WITH THE SIGN THAT SHE DID HAVE DISPLAYED. HE SAID THAT IT WAS.TOO TALL AND TOO MUCH SQUARE FOOTAGE, ACCORDING TO THE SIGN ORDINANCE. AGAIN , THERE WAS LENGTHY DISCUSSION AMONG THE BOARD MEMBERS.
MAURICE ESTLINBAUM MADE THE MOTION TO GRANT THE VARIANCE WITH THE STIPULATIONS THAT THE SIGN IS NOT TO EXCEED 9 SQUARE FEET, THAT IT BE HUNG NO LOWER THAN 14 FEET AND THE TOP OF THE SIGN IS TO BE NO HIGHER THAN 20 FEET. ALSO; "THIS VARIANCE rs· ONLY FOR "COLLECTOR'S ALLEY AND IS NOT TRANSFERRABLE." SECONDED BY HOWARD YEAGER. MOTION APPROVED. STE.VE JOHNSON OPPOSED.
