MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE FRIENDSWOOD BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT
April 5, 1983
The Board of Adjustment met for a special meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, 1983, at City Hall, with thefollowing present:
Chairman Ed Dykes Elvia Salyer Ray Nelson Hal Taylor Bernice Box (Alternate) Bobbie Henry, Secretary
With a quorum present, and with Chairman Dykes designating Box as a voting m�mber for the meeting, the following business was transacted:_
CONTINUATION OF CONSIDERATION FOR FRIENDSWOOD CROSSING SIGNS
Guy Wade, architect for the development, was present to speak for the proposal for signs as originally presented.
Dr. Bill Jones, Lila Ritter, Doris Heard, and Pat Riley, all of whom are members or past members of the Community Appearance Board, originators of the concept of sign regulations in Friendswood, discussed with the Board and Mr. Wade some of the logic behind maximum size limits on signs as set £orth in .the Sign Ordinance No. 323.
Mr. Wade had no alternate to his original proposal and the Boar.ct felt that existing conditions do not constitute a hardship to the developer, nor to future tenants of the shopping center.
Chairman Dykes asked for a vote on the question, "Shall a variance be granted on the amount of signs permitted-for the Friendswood Crossing Shopping Center." The vote was:
FOR: None AGAINST: Five
The request for variance was denied.
REQUEST FOR VARIANCE ON SIGNS AT MIKE'S GYM
Mike Thompson, with his attorney Tom Haanz, requested that Mike's Gym signs be allowed to stand as .is due t6 the location of the business where a mansard sign can not be viewed from the street. At present Thompson has a billboard type sign painted on the side of the building which is 216 square feet border to border, and a free-standing sign at the front of the shopping center.

REQUEST BY RALPH LO\�E FOR A VARIANCE FROM THE ZONING ORDINANCE Mr. Lowe was to-ld by the Bciard of Adjustment that no variance l Iwas necessary because he was within the ordinance regarding his home that is being built on FM 528.
MOTION: (Harold Whitaker) The owner ha� the prerogative to designate Clear Creek as the rear of his · property, thus makingthe side in question the side set-back. Therefore no varianceis necessary provided that the building inspector determines the· foundation is at least 10 ft. from the property line. SECOND: (Ray Nelson) VOTE: Unan·imous
REQUEST BY BURGER KING FOR A VARIANCE-FROM THE SIGN ORDINANCE
In addition to a standard building sign, 72 sq, ft., requestwas made by Burger King for a 10' by 10 1 • 15 1 high temporaryfree standir rg sign for one year trr be replaced by a 4' by 4 1 monument sign. REQUEST FOR VARIANCE ON · ROADWAY BY DICKIE ARNDT
Dickie Arndt, upon request from Planning & Zoning, asked fora variance on a street ROW and an existing pre-school, MOTION: (Hal Taylor) If P&Z approves Developmert, the Board will ·grant a vari a nee -based on 5 1 set-backfrom roadway to side of structure. SECOND: (Harold Whitaker)
VOTE: Unanimous FOR
