with all members and alternates present, the following items of

SIGN VARIANCE REQUEST - KROGER SHOPPING CENTER
Mr. John O'Conner represented Kroger on their variance request.
He infoLuned the board of their intensions of placing (1) a cube
pole sign on FM 2351 containing 81.40 square feet per side (a
total of 325.6 square feet). The sign height being 23' (2) a
script sign of 224.54 square feet on the building. (3) a "24
hour" sign containing 15.25 square feet.
He stated they would like to advertise competive of Safeway:
After Mr. O'Conner's presentation of Kroger's sign plan, several
citizens made their comments in regard to the signs.
Mrs. Elda Matheny - questioned Mr. O'Conner on how our
ordinance compared with other citys. . He stated it varied.
Mr. Dennis Holt - there were no negotiations with Planning
and Zoning on the sign problem from Kroger. The Planning
and Zoning Commission were told by Kroger representives
it would not be a problem and they did not question our sign
ordinance.
Mrs. Doris Heard - asked the board to consider the safety
hazards of pole signs. Such as, the problem of the sign
for "Stop 8 Go" near Pearland. She stated businessmen
benifit from sign ordinances. Pictures were shown to the
board of attractive signs outside the city which were
effective yet-attractive.
Dr. William Jones - stated it would benifit Kroger to comply
with the ordinance by promoting goodwill with the citizens.
After the citizens were heard the Board discussed the request.
It is their feeling that a large sign would be a detrement at
the corner, and the public would not be attracted by the sign but
by the quality of the merchandise. They also felt that with
intergrated centers the other businesses should have equal
rights.

Re: 204 Whispering Pines
Zoning Ordinance No . 291
Dear Board Members,
To complete the landscaping and fencing for our
home , we have contracted for yard fence as outlined
on the drawing included here . Since the fence , as
proposed, would conflict with City of Friendswood
Zoning Ordinance No. 291, we are asking that you
consider our reasons for requiring this fence and
grant an adjustment.
Our home is approximately 180 feet from the
street and is just about centered on a 3. 1 acre tract
of land. We enjoy horses as a hobby and without the
fence would loose close to three fourths of an acre
for pasturing or working our horses safely.
Whispering Pines is a very busy street and
vehicles (2 wheel and 4 wheel) driven by vandals
periodically are__driven through our front yard.
Fencing with evergreen shrubbery would give us needed
privacy and security from a major thoroughfare .
The proposed fence would not be solid so as to
obstruct vision and would be landscaped on both sides
to add a decorative feature to our home and to the
roadway.
Respectfully submitted,
Michael T. Storey
