Re5ular Meeting November 2712018
A regular meeting of the Friendswood Public Library Board of Trustees was held on November
27, 2018 at the Friendswood Public Library, 416 S. Friendswood Drive, Friendswood, Texas. The
meeting was called to order by Chairman Mike Czarowitz at 7:00 p.m.
ATTEND
Mike Czarowitz, Diane Freeman, Neeta Jambhekar, Benette Rowley, Ted Thomas, Betty Stacy,
Madeline Short, City Manager Morad Kabiri, City Council Liaison Steve Rockey, Assistant
Library Director Karen Hart, and Library Director Matthew Riley. JoAnn Karrick, Chester
Karrick, Ethel Zansler, Jim Foreman, and various Friends of the Library members.
ABSENT
JoBeth Brizendine and FISD Liaison Robert McCabe
COMMUNICATIONS FROM THE PUBLIC
Ethel Zansler said that this is the best library and she is very impressed and ready to volunteer at
the Book Sale.
MINUTES
The minutes of September 2018 was presented for review. Ted moved and Madeline seconded that
the September minutes stand as presented. There was no objection and the motion passed.
DIRECTOR' S REPORT
Matthew first thanked the Friends of the Library for attending the meeting. He then went through
the Director's report. Madeline gave an update on the Friends and the Book Sale/Book Nook.
2017-18 YEAR-END STATISTICS REPORT
The Board discussed the year-end statistics. Karen reported that 39% of patrons use the self -
checkout. It was decided that signage would be considered to increase self -checkout use.
DISCUSSION: STAR WARS EVENT, OTHER EVENTS, FORMING EVENTS COMMITTEE
Jim Foreman gave a presentation on the upcoming event he is collaborating with the library for,
Star Wars Day on May 4th. This will be an all -day event with costumed character actors and a
showing of the films. Steve asked if the Board was interested in helping with this event.
Madeline suggested a VIP option for Friends members. Mike suggested that the Friends charge a
donation fee for photos with the characters. Matthew mentioned that the Friends would like to
join forces with the Library Board to create a Library Event Planning Committee. Madeline
mentioned wanting to have a Friends and Board Meet & Greet event as well. Mike mentioned
having an open house. Madeline suggested passing around a sign-up sheet for the new committee
at the next Board meeting. Steve suggested a "Mike's Minutes" style video project for the library
to post to the Facebook page. Matthew welcomed all new ideas like this one as he is currently

working on making something similar. Steve will come up with some sample ideas and Madeline
will assist.
UPDATE ON SELF -CHECKOUT
Matthew gave a quote for the new machine and mentioned that they are going with the same
company as the one previously purchased and the new one will be mobile.
REPORT ON Education aid Lifelong Leai°Wing SURVEY RESULTS
Matthew reported the results of the survey, which had 115 respondents.
DISCUSSION: LIBRARY SIGN VIEWABLE FROM SPREADING OAKS
There was discussion on having more signage on the Spreading Oaks side of the library. Karen
suggested a monument or "library parking lot" sign.

Ted moved that the meeting be adjourned at 8:10p.m.
