1. Call to Order: Meeting called to order at 6:02 pm.
2. Discussion/Approval of January 23, 2018 Minutes: Table
3. Communications/Guests: Sherry introduced, Lynn Schakawa and Morad Kabiri on
getting KFB’s opinion on the location of the artwork that wants to be donated to the
City. Lynn handed out information on the artwork. Lynn informed the board on the
annual chalk walk raised money to help pay for medical bills for the art teachers
husband that was battling cancer. With the remaining funds the groups wanted to
donate public art or concept that would be provided to the city. First thought was a
bench with an oak tree on it. Lynn stated that in 2014 there were only 14 benches
down Friendswood Drive, the next year there was 22, last week there were 35 benches
in the downtown area. That is the plan of Friends of Downtown Friendswood an area
where people can park and use the benches; Lynn wrote the grant for the artwork on
the side of Sherwin Williams. Another art location is at Kwik Car, metal flowers and the
other art piece at Friendswood Hardware and the Memorial monument next to City
Hall. We have worked on this for the past year. Public art is very difficult because we
have a lot to consider. She listed the items that we have to look out for. What we have
determined after many months, the art we want to give to the city from Roger Davis,
the artwork is “For People” made out of quartin steel. It’s a wonderful product and
holds up very well. We originally wanted to put the sculpture in front of the park. One is
there a lot of vertical components in the front of the park and the electronic sign, these
items would interfere with this. Most of the time city hall is green, the grass slopes
slightly, which is idea for quartin steel. We can encourage other businesses to add art
as well. The city backs public art and hoping other art work would be added to the
city. The city can pour the concrete pads for us; the gift is an artwork piece worth
$14,000 we are prepared to make it if you approve it. What kind of questions do you
have? Kaye asked how the material is treated. It’s not copper so it won’t turn green.
How is this going to hold up if kids climb on it? Art sparks and encourages imagination.
Sherry stated that KFB is delighted on the artwork added to the city, that people and
groups are helping beautify Friendswood. We have looked at some areas we are
looking at redoing, like the Fig bed on the corner of Shadwell and Friendswood Dr. To
look at the corner and add the sculpture in that area. In talking with the board they
stated they would rather have the artwork in the park. Sherry stated that what we
experience during holiday times when certain things go in that area. I understand
where you’re coming from but we just did not feel it should go in front of city hall. We
think the park would be the best area and would highlight the sculpture in Stevenson
Park. Lynn stated we would have to go back to the group. Sherry stated that there has
to be some sort of criteria like the artwork painted on the restrooms and the kind of
things that are added to the park. Sherry suggested that other groups would come in
and want to add artwork to the park. I appreciate where you’re coming from, I think
it’s awesome but I think we need to look at some criteria. Lynn stated we are ready to
pull the trigger on it, and we’re ready.
Tyler Sharp presented his power point on the Liberty Tree project, his project is now
completed.
Thomas Kidd, he creates t-shirts and wants to raise money and partner with a group.
