MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE ZONING BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT
September 27 , 1983
A meeting of the Friendswood Board of Adjustment was held in
the Council Chambers at City Hall on Tuesday, September 27 ,
1983 , at 7 : 00 p. m. with the following members present :
Chairman Ed Dykes Nick Capuano, Sign Official
Ray Nelson Bobbie Henry , Secretary
Elvia Salyer
Hal Taylor Alternate Grace Baker was also
Dr. Tom Sullivan present , but not sworn in.
With a quorum present , the following business was transacted:
BURGER KING
Charlie Moore , Franchise Manager, explained that when an earlier
sign variance was requested and granted, no consideration was
given to their menu board which will be located at the rear of the
building and screened from public view. He explained that this
board is necessary to their drive-in window business and asked that
this be allowed in their sign permit.
A number of people from the Planning Commission and the Community
Appearance Board spoke against any further variance for Burger King.
Members of the Board of Adjustment asked Mr. Moore if he would be
receptive to adjustments in the signs which have already been approved
in order to make allowance for the menu board. He said he would.
MOTION: (Nelson) To permit the menu board under the following
conditions :
1. That it be landscaped so that it can be viewed from
directly behind the building , and that it carry no
advertising.
2 . That the wall sign be reduced from 72 feet to 64
feet by eliminating the words "Home of the Whopper. "
3. That the free-standing monument sign be reduced to
4 feet by 4 feet.
NOTE : #2 and #3 would then come within the 80 feet allowed
by the ordinance .
Second: Sullivan
Vote : Unanimous FOR MOTION CARRIED
DR. JACK BRIDWELL - On studying the sign drawings , the Board concluded
that although the individual signs on the integrated sign were slightly
over 5 feet , the total footage was not in conflict with the ordinance ,
thus no variance was needed, and the sign should be permitted as is .
MOTION: (Taylor) That no variance be required.
Second: Salyer
Vote : Unanimous FOR MOTION CARRIED
ADJOURNMENT - Motion made and seconded that the meeting adjourn .
The meeting was adjourned.
