Requesting a variance not to install sidewalk along FM 518. Background Friendswood United Methodist Church (FUMC) has an approved Specific Use Permit (SUP) with the site plan showing a sidewalk along FM 518. The sidewalk from the driveway to the Drainage Districts easement ends on a downhill slope to the ditch (see attached photos). The sidewalks were approved in the SUP. The Church is finishing the new sanctuary and one of the items to be completed is the sidewalk. The Church has been given a Temporary Occupancy that is to expire in January 2008. Attached is a copy of the approved site plan and the sidewalk that is in question is highlighted. One portion of the sidewalk on the south side would end at the ditch bank if a bridge is not installed. Staff Comments The Design criteria Manual Section IV Street Paving Chapter I Requirements for Curbs and Sidewalks Street Paving number 4, states that sidewalks are required along all curb and gutter streets. The Galveston County Consolidated Drainage District has contacted us about the trees and the sidewalk, and stated that during normal mowing, both would have the potential of being damaged in the process.
