BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT
DECEMBER 15 , 1987
MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE ZONING BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT.
OF THE CITY OF ' FRIENDSWOOD WHICH WAS HELD AT CITY HALL ON
DECEMBER 15 , 1987 WITH THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS CONSTITUTING A
QUORUM:
CHAIRMAN HAL TAYLOR
REGULAR MEMBER STEVE JOHNSON
ALTERNATE MEMBER MARY ELLEN BELLARD
ALTERNATE MEMBER KENNETH KONCABA
ALTERNATE MEMBER HOWARD YEAGER
SIGN CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICER CAROLYN MAUTNER
ASSISTANT TO CITY SECRETARY JANE TOLLETT
CHAIRMAN HAL TAYLOR CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER . MARY ELLEN
BELLARD AND -HOWARD YEAGER WERE APPOINTED REGULAR MEMBERS FOR THIS
MEETING.
CHAIRMAN TAYLOR CALLED FOR PUBLIC INPUT REGARDING REQUEST FROM
HAYGOOD WILSON OF CRAFTS , ETC . , 105 WEST EDGEWOOD , CAPTAIN ' S
CORNER SHOPPING CENTER SEEKING A VARIANCE FROM THE SIGN ORDINANCE
TO INSTALL A PYLON SIGN ON WEST EDGEWOOD .
MR . WILSON STATED CRAFTS , ETC . IS LEASING FROM THE SAFEWAY
COMPANY AND THIS LOCATION WAS CHOSEN BECAUSE THE DEMOGRAPHICS
WERE SHOWN TO BE VERY GOOD IN THE AREA . HE FEELS THAT THEY HAVE
PUT THEIR BEST FOOT FORWARD AND NOW WOULD LIKE FRIENDSWOOD TO
HELP THEM. THE STOREFRONT SIGN WAS MADE AS LARGE. AS POSSIBLE FOR
THE BEST VISIBILITY AND THE LETTERS ARE RED WITH WHITE BACKGROUND
TO CATCH THE EYE BECAUSE OF THE LOCATION ON FM518 AND EDGEWOOD IS
HAMPERED BY THE SMALL SHOPPING CENTER ON .FM518 AND SHAMROCK . GAS
STATION. CRAFTS STORE STANDS ALONE IN THE CAPTAIN' S CORNER
SHOPPING CENTER AND IS NOT A PART OF IT AT ALL AND THEREFORE
CANNOT BE ON THE CAPTAIN ' S CORNER PYLON SIGN. HE IS REQUESTING . A
PYLON SIGN TO BE INSTALLED ON A CONCRETE PAD WHICH IS ALREADY "
AT THE LOCATION NEEDED WITH PLANS TO HAVE A PLANTER AT THE LOWER
PART OF THE SIGN . THE SIZE OF THE SIGN WILL BE 4 FOOT WIDE AND
12 FOOT HIGH . AGAIN , HE STRESSED THAT THE PYLON SIGN IS NEEDED
BECAUSE OF THE LIMITED SIGNAGE OF THE CRAFTS , ETC . STORE .
DISCUSSION FOLLOWED BETWEEN MR . . WILSON AND THE BOARD MEMBERS AT
LENGTH .
CHAIRMAN TAYLOR CALLED FOR CONSIDERATION AND POSSIBLE ACTION
REGARDING REQUEST FROM HAYGOOD WILSON OF CRAFTS , INC . , 105 WEST
EDGEWOOD CAPTAINS ' CORNER SHOPPING CENTER TO INSTALL A PYLON SIGN
ON WEST EDGEWOOD .
1
STEVE JOHNSON MADE THE MOTION TO APPROVE THE VARIANCE TO INSTALL
A PYLON SIGN ON WEST EDGEWOOD TO CRAFTS , ETC . ,INC . WITH THE
STIPULATION THAT IT FOLLOW THE SIGN CRITERIA WITH SIZE AND HEIGHT
AND FOLLOW THROUGH TO ADD BEAUTIFICATION TO THE BASE OF THE SIGN.
HOWARD SECONDED THE MOTION. MOTION APPROVED .

POSSIBLE ALTERNATE MEMBER TO THE BOARD . IT WAS THE DECISION OF
THE BOARD TO SUBMIT HIS NAME TO MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL FOR
CONSIDERATION AND POSSIBLE ACTION A-a AN ALTERNATE MEMBER TO THE
