MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE FRIENDSWOOD ZONING BOARD OF
ADJUSTMENT
March 22 , 1983
The .Board of Adjustment met in a call meeting at 7 : 00 p.m. on
Tuesday, March 22 , 1983 , at the City Hall with the following
present :
Chairman Ed Dykes
Elvia Salyer
Ray. Nelson
Bernice Box, Alternate
By unanimous consent, Mrs. Box was authorized to serve as a
voting member for' this meeting, making a quorum, and the follow-
ing business was transacted_:
REQUEST FROM BURGER KING FOR VARIANCE -FROM MAXIMUM SIGN AREA AS-
ALLOWED IN SIGN- ORDINANCE
Mike Carter and Rusty Phillips representing Burger 'King presented
drawings showing a free-standing sign, a mansard sign, and two ;
building mounted logo signs , plus an off-site sign located on
FM 518', all of which was in- excess of- three times the permitted
square footage of signs allowed under the ordinance. They indi-
cated that they had' no authority to accept any alternatives to
what they were requesting.
After some suggestions and discussion, they were told that their
request was far beyond the authority of the Board to consider. :
Thus a deadlock was reached and the Burger King people left with
no variance granted from the sign ordinance . I
REQUEST FROM FRIENDSWOOD CROSSING. DEVELOPERS FOR VARIANCE FROM
MAXIMUM SIGN AREA AS ALLOWED IN SIGN .ORDINANCE
Guy Wade, Architect , and Irving McGowan and Charles Dabney,
Leasing Agents for Friendswood Crossing Shopping Center being
built* at' the intersection of FM 528 and FM 518 , were requesting
. a variance from the maximum sign area allowed by the ordinance .
The wall signs they propose were in compliance with the ordinance.
Their free-standing sign- plan was designed much higher and larger
than the ordinance allows , and the question arose as to whether
the size of the shopping center should be considered in limiting
this integrated sign. The architect was commended by the Boardl
for the aesthetics of the signs .
After some discussion, it was decided to have some members of
the Board attend the Community Appearance Board meeting to dis-
cuss the reasoning behind some portions of the ordinance in an
effort to determine if a variance might be in order. Box and
Salyer volunteered to attend.
MOTION: (Box) To table the request from Friendswood Crossing
until 7 : 00 p.m. Tuesday, April 5 .

Vote : Unanimous FOR MOTION CARRIED
ADJOURNMENT - Motion made and seconded that the meeting adjourn..
