Call to order: Meeting was called to order 6:32 pm. 2. Discussion, Approval August 27, 2019 minutes: Shawn made a motion to approve the minutes as presented, Paul second the motion and the motion was passed unanimously. 3. Communication/Guest: Sarah Peters talks about a new art piece that Art in the park/FDFA are trying to get for Friendswood. She presented ceramic modern bird houses created by a Floridian artist. Art in the Park is offering to pay for all the houses but asking KFB members if they would be willing to maintain it. KFB voice their concern about mounting the houses to trees or poles. They wanted some more information from the artist. Natasha said we would come up with the questions and concerns and email them to Sarah so she could reach out to the artist. Sarah updates the board on some of the projects they are looking to do in the future such as a smaller mural, small sculpture, and bird houses. 4. Volunteer Hours: Natasha reports we are on track for our hours this year. 5. Committee Reports a. Executive Committee National Planting Day Update – KFB promoted the National Planting Day on Facebook with the Pollinator Garden. They also did an informational Video. Fall Haul – Fall Haul is on November 9. There will be a Adopt a Highway cleanup that day as well. Santa in the Park – KFB wants to do an elf tour through the pollinator garden. Mark your calendar for December 14th. Fairy Trail Update – Shawn reports that the sub-Committee decided on “Friendswood Fairy Trail” as the name. Starting budget of $2000 for signage, designs, and fairy doors/houses themselves. They are applying for a small grant from HEB to help fund the project. They have decided on what the each fairy will represent such as recycling, beautification, etc. b. Keep Texas Beautiful KTB Updates/Grant Opportunities – Training for the recycling partnership, webinar every Wednesday. c. Public Awareness Social Media Updates – Facebook had a 2% increase in likes and a 27% increase from last year. Instagram is an 8% increase in followers. The most liked post on Facebook was the “Don’t Mess with Texas Buc-eyes” post. Ice Cream Social Report – Everything went smooth and it will be the same format next year. d. Education School Partnership – Sherry reports that she has reached out to Cline through Stephanie Reddick. Sherry plans to have the educational folder together sometime in October that will include pollinator garden info, recycle info, etc. Toney updates the board that waste connections is trying to work with local school districts to come up with a plan for the paper recycling. e. Beautification Pollinator Garden Project Update – The tropical milkweed has been cut back for the migration in October. The milkweed will be cut down again in November. The citrus tee was treated and is looking better. The garden has been treated for ants. Today they staked some of the taller plants because of the recent storms some of them were leaning. Kaye plans to buy a Beauty Berry Bush at the next HG plant sale. Matching Grant – Kaye drove to Wedgewood to see if they have started on their project and they have not started yet. We are not taking applications for this year yet. Business Beautification Update – Shawn is working on coming up for guidelines for the Beautification Award and will have them ready for the October meeting. Shawn recommends Highpoint Insurance or Bergamo’s Spa in October. The new sign will be done in October. Sherry motions that we use these business for the next two-business beautification. Betty seconds the motion. f. Parks/FDEDC Report FDEDC Report – Paul reports that TxDot granted the FDEDC with $3.5 million dollars. $2.5 million for sidewalks. $1 million for mass armed traffic lights. Dog Park Grand Opening – Report that the grand opening went well. It’s estimated that there was about 100 dogs at the event. James Toney reports that Old City park will be opening soon. There will be a ribbon cutting for the kayak launch at 1776 park on Tuesday October 8. g. Environmental Action Recycling Trends/Update – Brent reported about recycle programs that people are doing around the US. Brent offered to take the recycling supplies to the recycle Club tomorrow. 6. New Business: Michael reports that a group in Santa Fe that makes blankets/mats that can be donated to the homeless. The Santa Fe group host a class to show you how to do it on October 12, 1-3pm at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Santa Fe. He presented to the board about having some volunteers do it here in Friendswood with recycled bags. Santa Fe Tire Recycle Day on October 24 for Galveston County residents. Kaye asked for volunteers for the Rain Barrel Harvesting event at the Library for this Saturday. Todd let the board know that we lost our Tree supplier for the tree giveaway. And he is looking into a new supplier. Trish informs the board about Cole Gordon’s passing. She informed the board that Lighthouse Cooking Team is taking donations in his honor. Trish invites the board to the Library fundraiser “Speakeasy” and the Rotary Regatta in October. She informed the board about the bond election for November 5. Lisa reported that she has some dates that are open for her bag class and said she can except about 5 people. Patty Steinke reported that UHCL is hosting a plant sale event.
