**Executive Committee: Updated the board on what we discussed at the executive meeting.
Simple Recycling Program Revisited – Kimberly presented the Simple Recycling (curbside recycling)
packet to the board again. Sherry tells the board about how the meeting with Simple Recycling
representative went. Explained how the marketing has changed and it states “donate first” and their
advertisement post cards and encourage donating first to local donation centers. We have references
from Sugarland, Pearland, and Rosharon. Natasha explains that Pearland stated they collected tons of
textiles during the time they have used Simple Recycling. We want the Simple Recycling representative
to go to Council in October. Sherry encourages the board to look over the packet so we can vote on it at
September meeting.
Keep Texas Beautiful/Susan Stephens – Susan reported on Fall Sweep and the registration is now open.
The event has now extended for longer than just a week (Sept. 8 – Nov. 11) and over laps with National
Planting Day, Americas Recycles Day and Fall Haul. She says we should reach out to volunteers for the
Fall Sweep event.
**Public Awareness/Natasha: Facebook as of August 2017 1,000+ followers and August 2018 2,000+
followers.
Holiday Decorating Contest – Natasha informed the board about not making it a contest and making it a
“Light-Up Downtown” initiative. We will advertise it through Facebook and flyers. Ashley suggests that
we could let the new businesses in Friendswood know that they could participate and we would
highlight them on the Facebook. Brandee mentions about maybe letting the strips works together to
light their strip center. The goal is to try and get the whole downtown lit up. It won’t be so much of a
contest but just business getting lights up.
Instagram Account to highlight Figgy at various places – Natasha talks about starting an Instagram
account for KFB and taking pictures of Figgy around town. She also mentions to come up with a small
Instagram mural around Friendswood. The small wall at Sno-Beach was suggested.
Picture Frames for KFB photos – Natasha tells the board about the Instagram frames we plan to have
and to take a picture for social media around town.
**Education/Patty Steinke:
Bird House Project – Sherry let the board know that the Blue Bird houses are already up in the park and
that the Owl/ Bat houses will be up in September or October.
**Beautification/Kaye Corey: Michael and Kaye sent in a high grass report to code enforcement. She
also mentioned that the matching grant money will be presented to Heritage gardeners in their rose
garden on Thursday.
Pollinator Garden Project – Susan presents the proposal for the garden. A pollinator garden is a garden
full of native plants and attracts animals and insects. We need a pollinator garden because the habitats
for birds, butterflies, and bees are diminishing. The pollinator garden will be located in Stevenson Park in
a patch of grass between the basketball courts and the Stevenson Park wall. The garden will be raised
with small to tall shrubs, plants, and Lemon tree. The garden will feature a water feature and an Arbor
entrance. The garden can be used for education as well. The board voted on $3000 for the pollinator
garden. Susan motions to spend $3000 for the start of pollinator garden, Natasha seconds the motion
and the motion was approved unanimously. Sherry explains this is the $3000 to get the garden started
and more funds may come later.
Galveston County Master Gardeners Workshop – Kaye lets the board know about the citrus workshop
on Sept. 8th from 1-3pm at the library. The library asked KFB to set up a table at the workshop for
marketing. This may include education committee as well.
**Environmental Action: Michael reports that award went to Forward Automotive and they were very
appreciative. Susan suggests that we use Friends Pub as the next business beautification because of
their flowers in front.
**Parks/Paul Marx: Natasha asked if there was parking going in at Friendswood Lake. Michael explains
that there has been land purchased to get 40 extra parking spots. Michael also updates the board on
1776 park. Michael tells the board that Galveston County Drainage district is going to make 1776 park
into detention. They plan to do some tree removal and add concrete walking trails.
6. Median Maintenance: Improvements are coming soon for the FM2351. FM518 medians will be
improved late December or January.
