approve the minutes as corrected, Patty Steinke second the motion and the
motion was approved unanimously.
3. Communications/Guest: Sherry informed the board that Sara Eakin is an
official board member and the rest of the guest introduced themselves.
A. Volunteer Sheets: Sherry informed the group to please turn in your numbers.
B. Median Maintenance (Knock out roses): The roses have been purchased and
installed. Kaye suggested pulling out dead hawthorn in median by the Potters
liquor median.
C. Stevenson Park trees: Todd has an auger to help plant trees. Sherry would
like to plant them within the time of the national planting day. Patty made a
motion, that we purchase 4, 65 gallons live oaks for installation in Stevenson Park
pending on approval of the budget, Kaye seconded the motion and it was
approved unanimously. James, Kaye and Todd will meet at Stevenson to
identify spots for new trees. James stated that there have been some things
involving the parks recently. In July council created the Parks adhoc
committee, they discuss how we can improve our parks with parks the
dedication funds. James Toney informed the board of how the parks
dedications funds works. The adhoc committee has met to discuss how to
distribute the funds throughout city parks. The following are the parks
improvements that have been improved. Install a bridge that will connect
Stevenson Park to Old City Park, light a Centennial park field, improvements to
Stevenson park; redo the sidewalk and ramp at the gazebo and install a drive
from Shadwell to the gazebo. James asked if KFB had a preference on what
type of material they would like used on the drive. Pavers or colored stamped
concrete. We're also looking into taking Imperial Estates and create a dog park,
a disc golf park and hike and bike trails and also including 1776 into Imperial
Park and incorporate both parks. We could use funds to help fund the dog
park. Lake Windmere, there has been some issues out there recently. There has
been discussion in fencing the lake off and $300,000 has been allocated to add
pavilion, floating pier, security lighting and improvements to the road. To do
Lake Windermere correctly we are thinking of putting out a bond in May. We
would like to get KFB involved in some of those items especially Stevenson park
by getting your blessing and recommendation.
D. Keep Friendswood Beautiful
Banners: We have talked about some kind of banners in Renwick Park, we have
identified the locations but we are waiting for the hardware to be shipped.
James stated that we established 4 concrete light poles that we will install the
banners. We ordered 20 new banners that stated “Welcome” and “Keep
Friendswood Beautiful” for FM2351. They will start at Blackhawk and continue to
FM518. Everyone was in agreement with the new banners.
Solar lights: Kimberly Ramirez informed the board that Texan Bank has donated
$1500 for a solar light in Stevenson Park.
Promotional items: Kimberly informed the committee that the items on are order,
the pencils and badges have been shipped.
KAB National Planting Day:
KFB Signage for Playgrounds:
The signs have been made, and the board was pleased with them. They will be
installed next week.
Educational Projects: Sherry informed the board that we are creating a Figgy
book. We are approaching FISD to see if we can work this into their curriculum.
Stadium Cleanup: Susan has contacted the sponsor at the high school that
takes care of the recycling club. All the clubs help with the cleanup. FISD High
School loved the idea, and is looking at Oct 5th game. Their supposed to get
back with me. Susan suggested having a few board members present. Would
like to have some exposure.
E. Fall Haul a Day/Garage Sale America Recycle Day November 3rd:
Everything is done and ready for the event. Sherry stated that we need
everyone at the park at 7:30am. We need a person that will be the contact
Pete at Sonic and ask him to provide lunch. Martha volunteered.
F. Committees
City Hall Beds: Patty got an estimate from a power wash company for the front
of city hall for $700; Kimberly got an estimate too of $500. The front of city hall
will be power washed in early November. Fall color will be installed during that
time as well.
Santa in the Park: Sherry informed the board of the presentation of the Santa in
the Park sponsorship. Hometown Bank agreed to sponsor the event. They were
thinking of where they would like to put their investment and Keep Friendswood
Beautiful and the City is where they want to invest their brand. The main
concentration of this would be installing a 20' tree with Mayor, Council, KFB and
Hometown Bank on stage for the tree lighting. Home for the Holiday’s with
HomeTown Bank and KFB presents the 5th annual Santa in the Park event is the
name of this year’s event. HomeTown agreed to sponsor the event in the
amount of $20,000 and $10,000 for the next 5 years. $15,000 is the cost for the
tree; Bright lights of Houston will supply the tree and decorate it. We will be
looking for sponsors to fund the rest of the event. We will also add banners and
signage in Stevenson Park. The other money will be for the snow. The
subcommittee did a really good job and will be meeting regularly soon.
Todd asked how this would coordinate with the Historical Tree lighting. James
stated that it looks like we're going to have 2 separate tree lighting. James
Toney informed the board of the schedule for Santa in the park event.
He stated that the band won’t cost us anything because the band rained out
from concert in the park. Santa will be stationed at the Tree.
Holiday Decorations: The decorations have been ordered. The City Hall tree will
be up before the 10th.
Halloween in the park: Show up in regular shirts and decorate need help to
make decorative milk jugs. Halloween in the park meet at 6pm.
Business Beautification award:
Park Pals: Cindy Roberts is watering in Stevenson this week.
Political signs committee report: They had a private session at the council
meeting to discuss it and the attorney had some question about it and they
forward the whole thing to council. I think he’s going to reply pretty soon. They
want to limit the number of political signs and where their placed.
Downtown criteria report: P & Z has approved everything we recommended.
Staff had 2 issues who were going to maintain and will it apply to existing
dwelling. It was not going to be preexisting and just new developments if a
business elected to do this on their own would they be obligated to do
everything. Huntingwood’s elected to do the pavers but they wouldn’t be
obligated to do everything. Our latest development here in Friendswood didn’t
do anything that we wanted for the downtown area. James stated that staff is
working with him and how they could get him to conform to these things. Sherry
stated that working with P & Z was very enlightening. I feel very strongly that P &
Z has been very supported. Mona has done an outstanding job thru this whole
process. I feel very strongly that P & Z will be very supportive on the presentation
to council. Sherry would like everyone to be there with their purple shirts on at
October’s council meeting.
G. New Business: Susan stated that the new affiliate signs look nice. Susan
wanted to make a motion to purchase 2 more signs for FM2351 and FM528
coming into Friendswood from Alvin. Todd suggested finding the owner of the
retention pond and having them maintain that area. Hunters Creek and HEB.
FM2351 needs to be swept; James stated that there are no funds available to
sweep that area. Patty stated that there are areas that are the worse near
Imperial Estates with leaf debris and the same trash that has been there for a
long time. James stated that Public works have cut the contract with the street
sweeper. James stated that he would get quotes on how much it would cost to
sweep quarterly.
4. Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 8:17pm.
