HomeMy WebLinkAboutKFB Minutes 2012-02-28Keep Friendswood Beautiful February 28, 2012 Minutes Board members in attendance: Sherry Goen Patty Steinke Kaye Corey Paul Marx Susan Stephens Loretta Murphy Gayle Rodgers Mary Stockwell Martha Cotton Jeremy Sampson Todd Mendenhall James Toney, Director of Community Services Kimberly Ramirez, Staff Carol Falcon, guest 1. Call to order: The meeting was called to order at 6:31 pm. 2. Discussion/approval of January 24, 2012 minutes: Susan Stephens made a motion to approve the minutes as presented, Patty Steinke second the motion and the motion passed unanimously. 3. Communication/Guest-Girl Scout Troop 26024 Project: Carol Falcon was a guest at our meeting about ideas on the mascot costume. Board members prefer a bird and their trying not to have material too hot since mascot will be wearing it during the summer time. Sherry stated that the board really doesn't know the direction their going to but she gave Carol examples of other cities mascots. Will bring more ideas to the board next month. A. Volunteer Sheets: Turn in hours to John Merrifield. B. Median Maintenance/Design for Medians/Plants/Irrigation: Kaye Corey stated that she and James met with Mr. McCullough about the landscaping of FM2351 medians. It’s estimated that it will cost $250,000 to install irrigation on FM 2351. Kaye stated that we talked about the condition of the Magnolia trees and how they looked like their all dying and Todd suggested taking all of them out. Kaye questioned if we could save them, but now since the recent rain the Magnolia trees are all leafed out. Kaye took pics of some of the trees after talking to Mickey Merritt and he suggested not fertilizing the trees. He stated that there’s too much fill around the base of the trees and the excess should be raked off. He also suggested taking the trees out that are only partially leafed or possibly take them all out and replace them with oaks. Kaye suggested landscaping just the ends of the medians. Todd suggested just putting in trees and landscaping the Friendswood/Galveston county part of the bridge to FM518 and the entrance sign. Todd suggested plant live oaks thru out the medians. Patty suggested staying consistent with the color and filling in with a matching color for the crepe myrtles. Kaye suggested a paver cap on the ends. James stated the medians already have concrete end caps. James stated that $600,000 is left over from the drainage project and a street light will be purchased along with a reader board sign. The remainder of the funds will be for the landscaping and irrigation on FM2351. Todd stated that the current landscaping, from the bridge out to Beamer, that possibly three crepe myrtles will have to be replaced. Sherry questioned how many Magnolias are salvageable; Kaye stated that there are not enough trees that look good and that all of them need to be taken out. C. Better World Books--Recycling Project with Library: Sherry stated that theirs a way to earn money thru this project. If KFB works with the Library she thinks it would be a good partnership and she wanted to know if anyone would want to take this. She’s looking for someone to do the leg work. Susan Stephens volunteered to investigate the details of the project. D. Keep Friendswood Beautiful **KTB Gold Star Affiliation Application: The application was turned in and we hope we qualify for this status. **KTB Grant Judging Travel Expenses: Sherry was selected to be a judge; they do not pay for anything. Any expenses are incurred by me. I have 2 nights in a hotel that is $200. Kaye Corey moves that KFB will pay for Sherry's expenses which include meals, gas and lodging Susan Stephens second the motion and the motion passed unanimously. **Continuing Education Workshops: Susan Delcambre is doing several workshops for FISD Continuing Education. **Solar Lighting in Stevenson: Sherry stated that there are 2 lights up in Stevenson Park right now. They look great; it can withstand 130 mile wind. Theirs 2, 10 watt led lights. Jeremy stated that they came up with a way to cover the back of the solar panel and they can screen print the city crest. Todd asked about the longevity of the lights, Jeremy stated its UV resistant and its last about 15 or 20 years without fading. The cost of the panel will be about $50 for the logo. Jeremy will put the city logo on the solar panel and KFB logo on the other one, free of charge. **Banners for Renwick Park: Loretta stated she wants 4 banners at Renwick. James suggested contacting Little League first. What type of design you want, different pictures or the same ones? **Affiliate Signs: It’s in the process of approval with TXDOT. **Border Stones in front of City Hall: James stated that the last time we installed the stones the cost was $1380, James suggested having the parks crew install. **E-Recycling Opportunities: Susan stated that Clear Brook high school is involved with e-recycling. Jeremy stated that he offered to take in e-recycling at his business but whatever you do; the city or the school district will benefit this. Jeremy held off until he found out who was the city’s new refuse contract vendor was. Jeremy will strum up the issue but he will contact the school district and the city to help push the initiative. E. Committees: **Business Beautification Award-New Sign Estimates: New sign estimates? Paul stated no, Frank is going to look into that. **KFB Mascot Recommendations: See communications from the public. **Sub Committee on Downtown Development Report: Paul stated that the subcommittee met before tonight’s meeting. Looking for recommendations from planning and zoning. Want to try to consolidate that and limit the choices on what’s out there. Brick pavers, narrow the choices down including street furniture. James Toney suggested completing their work and then presenting the recommendation to the new council. **Friends of Stevenson Sub Committee Report: Table F. New Business: James Toney stated that April 21 is the car show, in years past the historical society has sponsored the Fig Fest with booths. The historical society and the chamber have proposed to have KFB do this. The booths cost are $50-$90. They also want KFB to sell Chick fil A. The board will need to form a subcommittee to do this. KFB will definitely do Chick fil A for the Fig Fest but declined on helping with the booths for Fig Fest. Jeremy stated that he can have the lighthouse help out. Crawfish will be at the pavilion. James Toney stated that we can let the chamber know that KFB will sell Chick fil A. Cornerstone will start mowing Stevenson Park starting this Thursday. Next planting time will be in April. Kaye questioned that there is an empty bed their by the rotary sign, is that something that can be landscaped? Loretta will take care of that bed. Next Meeting-March 27, 2012 4.
