1. Call to order: The meeting was called to order 6:35p.m.
2. Discussion/approval of July 26, 2011 minutes: Patty Steinke made a motion to approve the
minutes as presented, Loretta Murphy second the motion and the motion was planned unanimously.
3. Communications/Guest--Forbes List--Friendswood --List of 25 Best Suburbs: Christian,
and Eagle Scout is looking at a location in West Ranch for a clean-up, he stated that he is planning
a trash clean up at the West Ranch nature reserve and wants to plant trees as well. Keep
Friendswood Beautiful suggested that the scout wait until November 5th to do his cleanup in
conjunction with the city cleanup. Sherry Goen informed him no matter what date they chose
please let KFB know what date they are doing his cleanup so KFB can take pictures of his event. He
asked what type of trees to plant in that area, KFB asked if he could come back and plant trees when
it’s cooler. They suggested Bald Cypress, or Live Oak. Paul Marx suggested cutting a trail in the
nature preserve area. Paul offered to show the scout where it’s at. Susan Stephens informed the
board that the City of Friendswood was listed as the best 25 Best Places to retire according to
Forbes magazine.
A. Volunteer hours: Sherry Goen informed the board to email their hours to John Merrifield.
B. Median Maintenance: Mary Stockwell stated that a crepe myrtle is blocking the view on
FM 518, Kaye Corey stated that there are dead trees on FM 2351 and she requested that they need
to be watered. She called the office and Kimberly Ramirez put in a work order to water the
medians on FM2351 twice a week. James Toney stated that they are in the works on acquiring a
grant to irrigate FM2351 if approved. If approved they are requesting new landscaping at the
medians. Paul Marx stated the gutters on FM2351 are filthy and needs to be cleaned. Kaye
Corey stated that the city contracts out a city sweeper to clean the streets twice a year. James
Toney stated that he will look into the sweeper contract.
C. Clean up Letters: Kaye Corey stated the lot across the library needs to be mowed, Bayou
Gardens, and the Stones Throw sign is coming apart. The Mobil on FM528 needs to be addressed;
owner is letting it go to get out of his contract. Mary Stockwell suggested sending a letter and
informing Code enforcement.
D. Keep Friendswood Beautiful
**KTB--Registrations Completed?--Susan Stephens- She has schedule the
Great American clean up the same day as the Fall Haul
Susan suggested that all KFB members signup for webinars that are on the KTB website. She
suggested starting helping with cleaning up after the football game and trying to pass the bag after
the game.
E. Rotary Pavilion Update: James Toney stated that the Rotary has a new banner and the
Rotary Pavilion sign has been repaired and repainted. They also added new flower beds, and is
waiting for the walkway to be installed. James informed the board that the Rotary opted not to do
that, but wants to do something bigger. They are installing 2 permanent BBQ pits and add a
pergola cover over the bbq area. James Toney stated the quote for the sidewalk will be $1640 and
he would like to fund that from the Stevenson park budget or KFB’s budget. Mary Stockwell
made a motion to fund up to $850 for the pavilion project to finish up the walkway, Paul Marx
second the motion and the motion was passed unanimously.
F. Stevenson Park--Compassionate Friends Garden Benches/Tree Limb Removal: Eagle
Scout, Roy Bradley power washed and repainted all the benches and installed bricks as a base on all
of the benches in that area. Irrigation and grass will be donated by Friendswood resident Ronald
Bradley.
G. Positive Letter to Business for Property Improvement/Appreciation Letters:
H. Improvement Letters: Board stated that Captains Corner looks great after new landscaping
has been installed.
I. Committee
**Business Beautification Award--Jacob White Building--Paul Marx-Frank Garza and
Paul presented the award to the owner of the Jacob White Building.
**Banner Committee Update--John Merrifield/James Toney: James Toney stated
that a company called Skyline will develop the portable banners. There will be 2 banners made for
the lobby of city hall. Also he has some quotes being developed by Arnett marketing. The idea
now is to create a banner with a picture of the library, and other city buildings along with the
recognition banners that will be installed along Friendswood Dr.

**Sub-Committee Report: Sherry stated that the subcommittee met a 5pm, they
subcommittee brainstormed on ways to get into the schools and the community. Gail has worked on
some projects and getting out in the community. She stated she arrange meetings with the
Chamber, Lions Club, and the Rotary. Sherry stated that Patty is working with the school districts
and teacher, Kathy Corley and wants to encourage adding the activity box to fit in the curriculum.
Since we were deficit in litter education on last year’s grant application she wants to focus on that
and possibly give students a patch for completing the activity. Sherry stated that she is looking to
form this partnership to get communities involved. Just remember that were out in the community
and all of us are a part of other groups, board members need to think on how to get KFB involved
with groups in the community. Santa in the Park, Gail stated that she still wants this committee to
be involved in this event. James stated that funding is an issue and now we need to look further on
sponsorships. Gail stated that she wants to gear it towards families. Gail stated that we are
moving the Animal Advocates away from the playground and will have a train and possibly adding
a hayride to this year’s event. We are still in need of more lighting in Stevenson Park. Sherry
stated that Gail needs to create a small subcommittee for this event. The board members that will
consist of the Santa in the Park subcommittee are Gail, Martha, Loretta, Sherry and Mary.
**KFB Mascot Recommendations--Mary and Marilyn: The proposed woody
costume was presented at the meeting. The first idea was a woodpecker in a red costume. Board
suggested for Mary and Marilyn to bring back more suggestions on the mascot at the next meeting.
Gail suggested naming the mascot “Bloomer”
J. New Business
**Monarch Butterfly Way station Project--Susan D: Susan suggested putting
attention to other areas to help with the grant. The Monarch butterfly is the only butterfly that
migrates and their habitat is disappearing. They have a program that you can have a monarch way
station in your community. You can plant seeds at the monarch way station that feed and harbor
the butterflies. She suggested working with schools to develop a way station. Susan also
suggested having Shred It come to Fall Haul so people can bring documents that needs to be
shedder. Susan stated that she and another master garden would like to offer some workshops to
the residents and wanted to do one with irrigation and water efficiency and would like to have KFB
fund this project. Workshops would include, Healthy lawn and gardens and Growing your spring
garden from seeds.
