Call to order: The meeting was called to order at 6:32 p.m. 2. Discussion/approval of February 22, 2011: Martha Cotton made a motion to approve the minutes as presented, Patty Steinke second the motion and the motion was approved unanimously. 3. Communications/Guest-Rotary Pavilion: James Toney stated that he talked to the Rotary president, Deloris McKenzie. James stated that their were some electrical items and roof repairs that needed to be made to the pavilion, and the Rotary have repaired these items. They have a budget of $1,000-$1500 to use for landscaping the area around the pavilion and they want KFB’s advice on what to plant. The interact club in Friendswood and Clear Brook High school have volunteered to help with planting the landscaping, and would request to have a KFB member at the pavilion during the landscaping. They want the landscaping towards the front of the park and would like to have the landscaping completed by the Fig Festival which is April 16th. Loretta Murphy informed the board that once adopted areas are landscaped they are not maintained and KFB or the city has to take responsibility over the newly landscaped areas. She also request irrigation at the pavilion. Loretta Murphy suggested installing a sidewalk by the pavilion. Loretta, Susan Delcambre, Oswald, Sherry, and James will be on the pavilion subcommittee. Kaye Corey suggested using knockout roses instead of the yellow bells for the medians on Friendswood Dr., since the yellow bells freeze during the winter and having to be cut back if they survive. Sherry Goen stated that the proposal for redoing the medians is $3,000 for all 6 medians. Sherry informed the board about the proposal from Corey on the entrance sign, which included Australian flax, dwarf bottlebrush, purple fountain grass, and stacked moss rock boulder. The quote is for $2,552.91. Patty Steinke suggested not using purple fountain grass since it freezes and doesn’t look good most of the year. Kaye Corey suggested landscaping the back of the sign also because it’s very visible from Friendswood Link and it’s currently not attractive. Sherry asked if the board wants to landscape the entrance sign this year. Kaye Corey stated she would like to landscape the medians first. Gayle Rodgers made a motion to spend $3745.00 on relandscaping the medians, Loretta Murphy second the motion and the motion passed unanimously. Patty Steinke made a motion to spend no more than $3,000 to landscape the El Dorado entrance sign, Susan Stephens second the motion and the motion passed unanimously. A. Volunteer Hours B. Median Maintenance/Proposals from Cornerstone/Reader Board/Medians: Corey Kirkland with Cornerstone has come up with a proposal for the medians and the entrance sign for the new El Dorado sign. Sherry Goen presented the board the proposal from Corey for the medians on FM518, Corey would like to turn all the small beds into one large bed. Corey will be installing pavers for the Sonic median soon; the moon rock will not work. The reader board will be done later. C. Clean up letters: Frank Garza inform the board that Winding way still needs to be addressed grass is everywhere. Susan Stephens stated that in Dunbar Estates there is a house that has a blue tarp on the house, she will email Cathy Gray. D. Keep Friendswood Beautiful Banners for Centennial Park/New City Banners: The banners went up at Centennial Park 2 weeks ago, Kimberly Ramirez passed around pictures of the installed banners. Board is very impressed with the look of the banners. Loretta Murphy stated that the Centennial park entrance sign is too small and the junior high sign takes over the sign from Centennial KTB Susan Stephens Great American Cleanup/Don’t’ Mess w/Texas: Susan Stephens stated that she has submitted a request for the highway clean up. Cathy Corey, with FISD would be nominated for educator award. Spring sparkle has been put on the KTB website. KFB Slogan: The new edited logo was passed around. The board suggested making the tree larger and adding a red bird. KTB Grant Notice on KTB Website on March 25: Notice will be on the website. State of the City Address on March 3rd: Paul Marx, Kaye Corey, Mary Stockwell, Sherry Goen, Martha Cotton all attended the State of the City. Loretta Murphy stated that that they were in the newspaper too. E. Spring Sparkle April 9th 7:30 to 2:00: Kimberly Ramirez stated everything has been confirmed for the event. F. Stevenson Park Loretta Murphy: Loretta Murphy stated that the boy scouts came out to the park and cleaned out all of the beds. Several beds have been planted and look really good. Oswald and another volunteer have been working on the beds at the park. Loretta suggested giving volunteers gift cards to Chilin Time. James Toney suggested asking Chilin time to donate gift cards to KFB to give to their volunteers. Susan suggested having the Great American trash off and having volunteers clean up the parks. Great American clean up for KAB for cleans up at the park and the trash off for KTB in April. G. Positive Letters to Businesses for Property Improvement: H. Improvement Letters I. Entrance Signs Update Lighting: James Toney stated that we should be getting the lights soon. Landscaping: J. KFB Report to Council May 2, 2011: Sherry Goen asked what kind of things that you want in the report. Banners, entrance sign, medians, 4th of the July, Citizenship award and volunteers. Encourage for all members to attend the presentation to council. K. Committees Business Beautification Award Paul Marx: Hometown Bank will need plaque by April Banner Committee Report-John Merrifield table Recycling Committee-Susan D and Paul: Paul Marx informed board that the board talked about the trash and recycle collection. Will send out the survey and will have a town hall meeting on April 19th to talk about the different refuse options to the residents of Friendswood. Recycle containers will be installed at all of the parks. 4 at sportspark, 4 at centennial, 8 at Renwick, and 3 or 4 at Stevenson park and have extra containers on hand for special events. L. New Business: Sherry Goen stated that she received a call from Tony Banfield to make sure that KFB is checking on the consistency for the downtown revitalization. She told him that they would work on any way they could to keep the consistency in the downtown area. Lighting, benches, and landscaping, and streetscaping. Paul Marx stated that he volunteered on being a consultant for the lighting at the downtown area. Sherry Goen questioned if it will be ok if someone from P & Z will come to a KFB meeting. James Toney stated that it would be fine but not sure if thing are going to change. Sherry stated that this could be a good time to approach this topic. Making P & Z and council aware that KFB is concerned about this topic. Sherry questioned if a letter should be sent to P & Z, and not deal with at all, or wait. Loretta stated that KFB would write a letter first about the boards concern about the consistency and references the 20/20 vision for P & Z future consideration and will cc Tony Banfield. KFB will draft the letter and will make sure it will get to P & Z. Reader board quote from Corey, Susan will design a drawing for the bed and will get with Corey next Monday afternoon. Loretta Murphy suggested looking at the entrance bed at Sunset Meadows. The current estimate is $986. 00. Susan Delcambre stated that she took home 10 seedlings from the tree giveay and they are growing well, she would like to plant the trees in the park.
