HomeMy WebLinkAboutKFB Minutes 2010-08-24 Keep Friendswood Beautiful Monthly Meeting Minutes August 24, 2010 Members and Staff in attendance were: Kaye Corey Gail Rodgers Loretta Murphy Martha Cotton Paul Marx Patty Stienke Sherry Goen John Merrifield Susan Decambre City Staff: Kimberly Ramirez Director of Community Services: James Toney City Council Liaison: Jim Barr 1. Call to order: Meeting was called to order at 6:35 p.m. 2. Minutes: Loretta Murphy made a motion to approve the minutes, Martha Cotton seconded the motion and the motion passes unanimously. 3. Communications: **Welcome New Board Member-Susan Delcambre: Sherry Goen introduced Susan Decambre to the board. **IESI--Discussion on Recycling Options-.Jim Barr informed board that he talked to IESI at the last meeting on recycling issues and made a suggestion on meeting with KFB and P & R board. Jim Barr suggested having larger recycle bins available for residents. Sherry Goen stated that recycling is a “new thing”, and their new ideas on recycling developing every day and improving recycling option every day. Loretta Murphy stated that she wishes KTB would start having stores help with recycling by charging a deposit fee on the purchase of beverages in glass containers. James Toney stated that he suggests having the P & R board and KFB meet with IESI at the next KFB meeting to discuss recycling issues. **Fall Haul A Day--Saturday, November 6th-Sherry stated that she would want the garage sale advertised more to increase the proceeds. Would need yard sale signs. 4. Discussion and possible action regarding: A. Volunteer Hours for August: Sherry Goen stated that John Merrifield has set up a wonderful chart for the volunteer hours and encourage members to send him their hours. B. Median Maintenance/New Plants/Irrigation: Kaye Corey stated she drew a plan for the medians on Friendswood Dr for the contractors that are repairing the drainage on FM518. She suggested more plants might have to be put in the medians. James Toney stated that the budget is not as large as initially thought, and the society garlic might have to be eliminated. C. Clean up Letters: Sherry Goen stated that she hand delivered a letter of improvement to the auto center on FM2351 and have not received any response. Kaye Corey stated that a property on Sunset had weeds growing onto the street by Misty Ln., the property on Castlewood and Sunset needs to be mowed, and the construction site next door to the Gardens and FM528 has grass about 6 ft tall. Board questioned who is responsible for the foliate that kills the grass on FM518 and FM2351. James will check with public works and TXDOT. D. Keep Texas Beautiful **Post Office Beautification Project (Eagle Scout): Sherry Goen stated that Eagle scout, Garrett did a wonderful job landscaping the post office. The board was very pleased with the finished result. **Replacement plants for Library: Kaye Corey stated that the nandinas need to be replaced, and she will replace the nandinas when it gets cooler with flowers donated to the Heritage Gardeners. **Banners for Centennial Park: James Toney stated that there are 6 lights poles in the entrance of Centennial and we are having a 4th of July committee member take pictures of events. James Toney will confirm the number of light poles at Centennial before going out for a quote. **Community Garden Guideline Draft: Sherry Goen stated that the Community Garden Guideline booklet was created by herself. KFB will put together the plan and give to local groups and HOA’s. James Toney stated that the city and KFB needs to be an advocate in starting the program and approach HOA’s with buyout lots in them. He suggested have a test lot at the overflow parking on Shadwell at Stevenson park. Kaye Corey suggests Susan Delcambre, due to her experience with community gardens. **Border Stone (Reader Board ($965)/City Hall Parking Lot Bed [$415]): Gail Rodgers made a motion to for KFB to fund the border stone around the reader board and the city hall parking lot, Patty Stienke seconded the motion and the motion passed unanimously. Gail Rodgers made a motion to approve funding of KFB badger signs for $130, Pens for $204, and buttons for $200, Paul Marx seconded the motion and the motion passed unanimously. **Business Cards: Loretta Murphy made a motion to purchase business cards for KFB, Martha Cotton seconded the motion and the motion passed unanimously. E. Business Beautification Award: Paul Marx stated he dropped off the sign at Jack in the Box and the owner. Was very appreciative. The board decided to pick Friendswood High School for the 4th quarter Beautification recipient, and would like to award the school on October 1, 2010. F. Stevenson Park **Adopt a Bed Signs/Brochure **. High School worker: Harold was working all summer long maintaining the Stevenson park beds Sherry Goen would like to send him a letter thanking him. G. Positive Letters to Businesses for Property Improvement: Board suggested the Post office. H. Improvement letters: I. Entrance Signs Update: James Toney stated that the granite if on order should be completed within 4 to 6 weeks. James Toney stated that he is getting a quote on solar lighting. Gail Rodgers made a motion to use the left over balance from the KFB budget go towards the lighting and landscaping for the entrance signs, Patty Stienke seconded the motion and the motion passed unanimously. J. KFB Website--Any Tweet or Website ideas? Boy scouts K. Committee: **Pavers for Stevenson Park Driveway Committee: The quote that James Toney got from a company for a crushed granite drive at Stevenson Park by the gazebo will cost $14, 880. The board thinks this amount is too much. **Volunteer Coordinator: L. New Business: Sherry informed the board that the first week of October, their will be a meeting to discuss Christmas decorating plans for city hall and Stevenson park. Stacy with Brite Ideas and Penny Burke will be at the meeting also. **Labor Day Parade--Alvin Next Meeting September 28, 2010 Santa in the park, Gail stated the snow hill will be donated by Amoco. Gail suggested having business donate Christmas trees and also decorate them. Gail stated that she will need a co-chair for this event. Gail stated that a movie was suggested for the event. Sherry Goen stated that the teenagers didn’t have anything to do at last year’s event. Jim Barr stated that the Friendswood Youth Council could work with KFB on the Santa in the park event and possibly get more ideas. Kaye Corey suggested a teen party at the pavilion with music and refreshments, and possibly a hayride. 5. Adjournment: Meeting adjourned at 8:31 Approved by: Kimberly Ramirez Date: 9-28-10
