Monthly Meeting Minutes
May 25, 2010

1. Call to order: Sherry Goen called the meeting to order at 6:34 p.m.
2. Minutes: Marty Abbe made a motion to approve the minutes as corrected, Frank
Garza second the motion and the motion passed unanimously.
3. Communications:
City Communications Committee Report: Sherry Goen stated that the communications
committee is ready to present a PowerPoint presentation to Council in July.
4. Discussion and possible action regarding:
A. Volunteer Hours for March: Committee members turned in their hours.
B. Banners and Poles (Stevenson Park)-Update: Sherry Goen thanked James Toney
and the parks department for putting up the banners in Stevenson Park. Patty Steinke
stated that she has heard a lot of compliments from parents on the banners on senior day
at the park. Patty Stienke suggested having banners made for Centennial Park and having
pictures of the events on the banners at Centennial. Patty Stienke made a motion that
KFB choose Centennial park for the 2010/2011 banners, Marty Abbe seconded the
motion and the motion passed unanimously.
C. Clean up letters: Walgreens FM 2351 and 518 remove dead trees. Frank Garza will
check with AutoZone on the upkeep of the landscaping
D. PSB irrigation and plants: Paul Marx checked the irrigation at the PSB median and
it is currently working. The lirope was transferred from library to PSB irrigation. Kaye
Corey asked if a crepe myrtle could be planted at the median at PSB, Kimberly Ramirez
informed her that Cornerstone has been notified to transplant one of the crepe myrtles
from the FM518 medians to the PSB medians. Loretta Murphy questioned if roses could
be planted at the PSB median? Kaye Corey stated they are low maintenance. James
Toney stated that the crepe myrtle will be transplanted in about a month, but depends on
TXDOTs schedule. Kaye Corey requested to move the crepe myrtle now to the PSB
median and one to the Potters liquor median because if we wait it will be too hot to
transplant. Patty Stienke made a motion to buy 10 rose bushes, 5 for the library and 5 for
the PSB median in the amount of $150.00, the motion was seconded by Loretta Murphy.
Gail Rodgers questioned James Toney if TXDOT will relandscape the medians after the
project is done; James Toney stated that they will only sod the medians.
E. Keep Texas Beautiful:
Library Beautification Award: The bed needs more rock and border stones. Library
approved the cost and the parks crew will install the border stones and the rock. Sherry
Goen thanked the volunteers who helped with this project.
F. Business Beautification Award-Loretta Murphy stated that Starbucks had flowers in
front of their business and looked really nice. Mary Stockwell stated that Jack in the Box
landscaping is looking good. Patty Stienke made a motion to award the Beautification
award to Friendswood Jack in the Box; Mary Stockwell seconded the motion and the
motion passesed unanimously. Kimberly Ramirez will order the plaque for Jack in the
Box.
G. Stevenson Park-Adopt Bed initiative/signs for recognition: Sherry Goen stated that
what the board is working on is to get volunteer groups to adopt a bed. James Toney
stated that he will have the street department make signs for recognition of adopted beds
and signage for beds that are available. Kaye Corey stated that the junior gardeners want
a bed at Stevenson Park. Sherry Goen informed that some youth groups are interested.
H. Positive letters to businesses for property: Starbucks, Walgreens FM528,
Friendswood Animal Clinic.
I. Improvement letters:
K. Entrance signs update: James Toney stated that TXDOT has not authorized the
plans for the entrance sign as of today.
L. KFB Website: The library project has been added to the KFB Web page.
M. Committees
Entrance Sign Irrigation, Electricity and Landscaping Committee: Kaye Corey
stated that she has been informed that the solar lighting for the entrance sign can’t be
taller than 7 feet tall according to city ordinance.
Pavers for Stevenson Park Driveway Committee: Gail Rodgers stated that she has not
received any response from the architect that is working on the paver’s project. James
Toney has talked to the architect and has confirmed he is still committed to the project.
N. New Business
KTB Conference in Austin-Has been confirmed, the KFB meeting has been changed to
June 29th.
July 4th Booth and Parade Float: The committee will decorate float on the 3rd. KFB
will have a booth at the day program. Patty Stienke made a motion to purchase
decoration for the 4th of July float and to not exceed $100, Gail Rodgers seconded the
motion and the motion passed unanimously.
Recycle program in Friendswood. Jim Barr requested to have recycle containers
provided to the citizens larger than what we have now. Have KFB request an upgraded
recycle program in Friendswood. Sherry Goen requested to invite IESI to a KFB meeting
and request larger bins.
Loretta requested to mulch city hall and add color and fox fern for the 4th of July. Patty
Stienke made a motion to spend up to $300 to add color, fox fern, and mulch to city hall,
Gail Rodgers second the motion and the motion passed unanimously.
Dead trees at Stevenson Park, Kaye Corey is disappointed that the trees that were bought
with the grant were let to die at Stevenson Park. She feels that was the responsibility of
the city staff. Sherry Goen stated that the KFB board members should notify the CS
office of conditions of the park. Loretta Murphy stated that the parks superintendent
should have this responsibility. James Toney stated that the parks crew is spread thin and
he will talk to the superindent and try to improve this situation.
