Keep Friendswood Beautiful Board
Monthly Meeting Minutes
January 26, 2010

1. Call to order: Sherry Goen called to order at 6:34 p.m.
2. Minutes: Marty Abbe made a motion to approve the minutes as
corrected, Martha Cotton seconded the motion and the motion
passed unanimously.
3. Communications: Sherry Goen informed the board that there
will be a Communication Committee meeting with city council
Thursday night and that she will be attending, Gail Rodgers will be
the substitute incase Sherry can’t make it. Sherry also informed
the board that she has met with the Youth Advisory Committee and
informed them of volunteer opportunities with the Keep
Friendswood Beautiful events.
4. Discussion and possible action regarding:
A. Tree Giveaway Report: 148 people attended the tree
giveaway, and all of the 200 container trees and 500 seedlings were
given away. The Arbor Day event that was held with the Heritage
Gardeners was also a success. Sherry Goen recognized Corey
Kirkland, with Cornerstone in helping offset the cost of the
container trees. Kaye Corey made a motion to give Corey
Kirkland a plaque for the appreciation of his help with the tree
giveaway, Frank Garza seconded the motion and the motion passed
unanimously. James Toney informed the board that Cornerstone
also donated the mulch, dirt, and labor for the Arbor Day event.
B. Banners and Poles: James Toney informed the board that the
cost of the banners will be $405 for 6 banners to be displayed in
Stevenson Park. The price doesn’t include the brackets. Loretta
Murphy made a motion to purchase 6 banners and 2 set of brackets
from Arnett Marketing to display at Stevenson Park and not to
exceed $700, Gail Rodgers seconded the motion and the motion
passed unanimously.
C. Clean up letters: Patty Stienke expressed concerned that the
property on FM2351, across from the high school is littered with
trash and would like to know who the owner is. Kaye Corey stated
that Walgreens has not improved the appearance of the store on
FM518 and FM528; she requested to have James Toney talk to the
manager about this and just request to have mulch put in the area
facing the highway. Kaye Corey stated that the senior center
building’s landscaping, needs tending. James Toney informed the
board that Cornerstone will be fixing the bricked flower bed at the
senior citizen building including irrigation.
D. Stevenson Park Beautification: Loretta Murphy stated that
the rye grass in Stevenson park looks beautiful but the flower beds
needs to be tended to. Loretta Murphy stated that most of the
plants and flowers at Stevenson Park have died due to the freeze.
E. Keep Texas Beautiful
Presentation to Council on January 4th
City Council has officially approved the changing of the name of
Community Appearance Board to Keep Texas Beautiful and can
now apply for affiliation status.
Grant Applications Status: Sherry Goen informed the board that
the application will be filed Friday, January the 29th.
Waste in Place in Training: Training provided by Keep Texas
Beautiful will be held at the City of Pearland. Sherry Goen and
Loretta Murphy will be trained.
F. Business Beautification Award-January: Patty Stienke made
a motion to have a new sign made to reflect the new name of the
board on the sign, Kaye Corey seconded the motion and the motion
passed unanimously.
G. Santa in the Park Report: Gail Rodgers stated that the Santa
in the park event was a success. The event had free chili, coloring
contest, HEB buddy was in attendance, and the Friendswood High
School band.
H. Annual Committee Report to Mayor and Council--March
1: Sherry Goen stated that all the members need to keep track of
the hours.
I. Positive Letters to Businesses for Property Improvement:
Sent to Sunset Meadows and Century Oaks HOAs
J. Improvement Letters: Table
K. Entrance Signs Update: Ron Levison with Signworx,
presented drawings and a sample of the materials of what the sign
is going to be made of; which will be green granite stone combined
with an Austin limestone or a Texas cream stone. The locations of
the signs will be on FM 518/El Dorado and FM2351, Patty Stienke
made a motion that the board accepts the bid made by 4D
Signworx for three entrance signs which materials are made of
Texas cream stone and granite, the motion was seconded by Mary
Stockwell and the motion passed unanimously. Kaye Corey made a
motion to light the water tower on FM 528 and paint welcome to
Friendswood on the water tower, Mary Stockwell seconded the
motion and the motion passed unanimously.
L. 2010 Goals: Loretta Murphy stated that she would like to have
a waterway cleanup. Kaye Corey stated that she would like to
have an Adopt a Spot in Friendswood. Gail Rodgers stated that
she would like to put pavers in Stevenson Park on the other side of
the gazebo. Board would like to have landscaping, irrigation, and
lighting for the new entrance signs. Board would also like to work
on creating a mascot and a logo for KFB. Board requested to pay
for their new KFB shirts.
