HomeMy WebLinkAboutCEDC Minutes 2013-01-02 RegularFriendswood Community and Economic Development Committee Meeting Minutes January 2, 2013 The Friendswood Community and Economic Development Committee met on Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at 8:30 a.m., in the second floor conference room of City Hall, 910 S. Friendswood Drive, Friendswood, Texas, with the following members present: Chair Skip Evans, Vice Chair Pauline Moore, Tony Annan, Brett Banfield, Mark Conrad, and Bill Provenzano. Liaison, Dan Seal, of the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership was also present. Absent from the meeting were Jeremy Magnuson and Dr. Hilmar Zeissig. Staff member present was Karen Capps. Also present was Jeff Newpher of the Friendswood Journal. 1. Call to Order. The meeting was called to order at 8:36 with a quorum present. 2. Roll Call. Roll call was made. 3. Approval of Minutes. Bill Provenzano made a motion to approve the December 5, 2012 meeting minutes. The motion was seconded by Pauline Moore and it passed unanimously in the committee. 4. Discussion and possible action, but not limited to the Community and Economic Development Committee's strategic plan, goals, and action items. The committee reviewed and discussed a draft report for City Council regarding an FM 528 Strategic Development Plan. The committee would like to move forward and discuss their proposed FM 528 strategy with City Council and the Planning and Zoning Commission. 5. Reports: Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership Dan Seal reported there has been a full funnel of prospects in 2012 and expects many will come to fruition in 2013. The Greater Houston Partnership predicts 70,000 to 80,000 new jobs were added in 2012 and there are usually 60,000 for the area. Lots of people are moving here and the area is diversifying. There have been several major medical and plant expansions in the area. Ellen Ochoa, a veteran astronaut, was named the new NASA-JSC Director. Dan reported that there is a space symposium being planned for 2014. A legislative session is coming up and BAHEP is pushing for the Texas Emerging Technology Fund and Texas Enterprise Fund to have continued funding. City Staff Karen Capps reported on prospects. She also reported on a recent Houston Regional Economic Development Alliance quarterly meeting that was held in the region at Cullen's. There was information provided about the recent Pumps and Pipes Conference in Houston. 6. Adjournment. The meeting adjourned at 10:05 am.
