HomeMy WebLinkAboutCEDC Minutes 2012-10-17 RegularFriendswood Community and Economic Development Committee Meeting Minutes October 17, 2012 The Friendswood Community and Economic Development Committee met on Wednesday, October 17, 2012, at 8:30 a.m., in the second floor conference room of City Hall, 910 S. Friendswood Drive, Friendswood, Texas, with the following members present: Chair Skip Evans, Vice Chair Pauline Moore, Tony Annan, Brett Banfield, and Jeremy Magnuson. Also present were the following liaisons: Friendswood Chamber of Commerce President Carol Marcantel and Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership representative Dan Seal. Absent from the meeting were Mark Conrad, Bill Provenzano, and Dr. Hilmar Zeissig. Staff member present was Karen Capps. Also present was Jeff Newpher of the Friendswood Journal. 1. Call to Order. The meeting was called to order at 8:37 with a quorum present. 2. Roll Call. Roll call was made. 3. Approval of Minutes. Jeremy Magnuson made a motion to approve the September 5, 2012 meeting minutes. The motion was seconded by Tony Annan and it passed unanimously in the committee. 4. Discussion and possible action, but not limited to the Community and Economic Development Committee's strategic plan, goals, and action items. The committee discussed the recent Broker and Developer Day event. It was discussed that brokers are having a hard time being out of the office all day for the event. To boost attendance next year, it was suggested that we host a lunch in the golf clubhouse that begins at 11 a.m. and just have the Chair, Mayor, Karen, and BAHE speak, no featured speaker. It was also suggested that we invite one or two business testimonials (possibly municipal grant recipients). The work session with City Council scheduled for November 5 was discussed. The committee will highlight their annual report, strategic plan, marketing plan, and discuss ongoing work with amendments to the grant program. The municipal grant program was reviewed and some minor revisions were discussed. 5. Reports: Friendswood Chamber of Commerce Carol Marcantel reported there were 93 golfers at the Chamber's golf tournament and many of those were from the broker and developer day event. Halloween in the Park will be held on Sunday, October 28 at Stevenson Park. The Chamber Board of Directors recently held their annual retreat and discussed future plans and goals for the next year. The Leadership Friendswood Class will be attending the next City Council meeting on November 5. Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership Dan Seal reported that there is Sam Houston boat tour tonight for BAHEP members. BAHEP will host their annual member appreciation golf tournament on November 12 at Bay Oaks Country Club. The ICSC Texas Deal Making Conference and Tradeshow will be held on November 7 and 8 in Dallas. BayTech has been assisting to market underutilized laboratories at JSC to the private sector. JSC has more than 100 labs, i.e. RITF for failure testing. City Staff Karen Capps announced that the City received three awards at the recent International Economic Development Council Annual Conference that was held in Houston. Karen and the City Manager were present at the awards ceremony where the Retail Recruitment Advertisement won a Gold award, and the Live Here Work Here campaign and New Business Guide won Silver awards. Karen Capps made a report on proposed developments and prospect activity. 6. Adjournment. The meeting adjourned at 10:32 am.
