Meeting Minutes
October 12, 2011
The Friendswood Community and Economic Development Committee met on Wednesday,
October 12, 2011, at 8:30 a.m., in the second floor conference room of City Hall, 910 S.
Friendswood Drive, Friendswood, Texas, with the following members present: Chair Skip
Evans, Tony Annan, Mark Conrad, Kirk Lippert, Pauline Moore, Bill Provenzano, and
Dr. Hilmar Zeissig. Liaisons present were Friendswood Chamber of Commerce President
Carol Marcantel, Galveston County Economic Alliance President Don Gartman, and Bay
Area Houston Economic Partnership Marketing Director Barbara Cutsinger.
Absent from the meeting were Brett Banfield and Jeremy Magnuson.
Staff members present were Karen Capps and Nick Haby.
1. Call to Order. The meeting was called to order at 8:40 with a quorum present.
2. Roll Call. Roll call was made.
3. Approval of Minutes. Pauline Moore made a motion to approve the September 12
and October 3, 2011 meeting minutes. The motion was seconded by Kirk Lippert and it
passed unanimously in the committee.
4. Presentation by Galveston County Small Business Development Center Director,
Carroll Cobb.
Ms. Cobb was introduced by Don Gartman and the committee received an informational
presentation regarding the services provided by the Galveston County Small Business
Development Center including financing, training and consultation services, troubled
business assistance, marketing, and assistance with business plans.
5. Discussion and possible action, but not limited to the Community and Economic
Development Committee's 2010-11 goals and action items.
The new tradeshow banners were on display in the meeting room. It was also noted that new
community recognitions banners were on display in the foyer of City Hall and the library.
The committee reviewed the new economic development video and CEDC Facebook page.
Ms. Capps reported there are currently 17 rsvps for the October 20 broker event. A copy of
the new redesigned retail flyer was provided to the committee. The New Business Guide is
ready to print after applicable tax rates are confirmed. It was reported that Ms. Capps and
Mrs. Marcantel jointly visited Texas Solar Resources, VARC Solutions, and Buzbee Property
Development. Ms. Capps reported that staff had a meeting with a local developer regarding
potential development in the city.
6. Reports:
Friendswood Chamber of Commerce
Carol Marcantel reported the Chamber expects 95 to 100 golfers at this year's Swing into Fall
Golf Tournament. Halloween in the Park will be held on Sunday, October 30.
Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership
Barbara Cutsinger report that BAHEP will hold their broker reception early next year at the Hess
Club. CEDC members are invited to attend. The decision about Embry Riddle locating a facility
in the bay area has been postponed.
City Staff
Ms. Capps reported that she and Brett Banfield would attend a streetscaping workshop this month.
The CEDC is invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony of municipal grant project —
Friendswood Family Chiropractic Clinic. The event will be held on Tuesday, October 25 at 9:30
am at 1111 S. Friendswood Drive.
