HomeMy WebLinkAboutCEDC Minutes 2010-05-10 RegularFriendswood Community and Economic Development Committee Meeting Minutes May 5, 2010 The Friendswood Community and Economic Development Committee met on Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at 8:00 a.m., in the second floor conference room of City Hall, 910 S. Friendswood Drive, Friendswood, Texas, with the following members present: Chair Brett Banfield, Vice Chair Skip Evans, Pauline Moore, Cody Owen, Bill Provenzano, and Dr. Hilmar Zeissig. Liaisons present were Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership representative Dan Seal, Clear Creek ISD representative Eva deCardenas, and Friendswood Chamber of Commerce President Carol Jones. Also in attendance was Ivee Sauls of the Friendswood Journal. Staff members present were Karen Capps and Nick Haby. Absent from the meeting were Mark Conrad, Kirk Lippert, and Troy Waters. 1. Call to Order. The meeting was called to order at 8:11 with a quorum present. 2. Roll Call. Roll call was made. 3. Approval of Minutes. Bill Provenzano made a motion to approve the April 7, 2010 meeting minutes. The motion was seconded by Skip Evans and it passed unanimously in the committee. 4. Discussion and possible action, but not limited to the Community and Economic Development Committee's 2009-10 goals and action items. A. Retail/Restaurant Attraction No Report. B. Communications and Marketing -Live Here Work Here campaign Karen Capps reported that the new billboard is up on FM 2351. She has delivered t-shirts and window decals to about a dozen businesses during the last two weeks and spent time with many of the businesses. She will start encouraging businesses to use the LHWH logo in their marketing materials. -Community Video CEDC members viewed another city's business recruitment video that Joe Perez created. Eva deCardenas suggested that members view BAHEP's marketing video that was created by Marcus Havican of Space City Films for some ideas. Karen Capps reported that Nick Haby drafted a script of various topics to cover in the three minute video. Having two videos was discussed, a community video and a business development video. The community video would be placed on the homepage and the business video on the business page. Chair Banfield asked members to email their thoughts on what should be included in the video and email staff. C. Business Retention Visits Karen Capps reported that she visited many businesses during the last month while delivering the Live Here Work Here t-shirts and window decals. 5. Discussion regarding the Chapter 380 municipal grant program. Chair Banfield asked for committee volunteers to review the grant program's guidelines and report back to the committee. Bill, Cody, Pauline, and Brett volunteered to review the guidelines. 6. Reports: Liaisons Clear Creek ISD Eva deCardenas reported that Kirk Lippert and Hilmar Zeissig participated in CCISD's mock interviews to help prepare seniors for the employment interview process. There is an election for school board at large B position. Leda Smith, a 5th grade science teacher at G.W. Robinson elementary in Seabrook was recently named the best educator in the state by HEB. HEB awarded Ms. Smith with a $10,000 check for herself and a $10,000 check for her school. Friendswood Chamber of Commerce Carol Jones reported there were 160 cars and 55 booths at this year's Fig Fest/Car Show. AMOCO Federal Credit Union was the sponsor. HomeTown Bank's groundbreaking will be held Thursday, May 6 at 4 pm and the Chamber's Annual Party on the Patio will also be held on Thursday. Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership Dan Seal reported that the Citizens for Space Exploration trip is scheduled for Mayl7-19 and Mayor Smith will attend. Dan is hopeful that President Obama's decision for NASA's future funding will be overturned by Congress. The Offshore Technology Conference is currently being held at Reliant Park in Houston with over 72,000 attendees. City Staff Karen Capps reported on the annual report provided to Council by CEDC Chair Banfield on May 3. Council also approved a municipal grant for HomeTown Bank at the meeting. A press release will be sent out about the grant that includes information about the project being located in Downtown Neighborhood Empowerment Zone # 1. 7. Adjournment. The meeting was adjourned at 9:10 am.
