HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 83-07 RESOLUTION NO .R7-83 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FRIENDSWOOD URGING PASSAGE OF HOUSE BILL #136 REQUIRING A DEPOSIT ON ALL DISPOSABLE BEVER�GE CONTAINERS . WHEREAS , each year thousands of cans and bottles are discarded on Texas highways and other public lands ; and WHEREAS , by throwing away cans and bottles instead of recycling them, natural resources are wasted and the beauty of Texas waterways , countryside and roadways is marred ; and WHEREAS , in 1982 , Texans spent over 12 million dollars for litter pick-uplby the Texas Highway Department , a goodly portion being disposable beverage containers ; and WHEREAS , House Bill 136 , now in committee and soon to be voted on b� the Texas State Legislature , requires a deposit on all disposab�_e beverage containers ; and WHEREAS , House Bill 136 would also ban detachable ring tabs and requires that all carrying devices that hold cans and bottles tpgethe� be bio-degradable ; and , WHEREAS , it is a proven fact that in States which have adopted container deposit laws , beverage container litter has been reduced as much as 750 ; NOW, THERE�QRE , BE IT RESOLVED BX THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OP FRIENDSWOOD, TEXAS ; THAT the Friendswood City Council urges passage of House Bill 136 by the Texas Legislature as a means of saving the taxpayers money in lit�ter clean-up costs , conserving natural resources by recycling containers , and protecting the beauty o� our env�ronment .
