A RESOLUT I ON OF THE C I TY OF FR I ENDSWOOD C I TY COUNC I L SUPPORT I NG THE
SIX NATIONAL GOALS FOR EDUCATION FOft OU8 COMMUNITY
WHEREAS , the United States of America was founded and has survived
for over 200 years on the principles of Democracy; and
WHEREAS, educated citizens are one of the cornerstones of a
democratic society; and
WHEREAS, the thorough education of children is one of America' s
best investments for the future; and
WHEREAS , many Americans are concerned about the current status
of academic achievement in our schools; and
WHEREAS , many Americans are concerned about the economic welfare of
our country and about the increasing foreign competition in the
industrial and technological races; and
WHEREAS, economic stability and growth come from improved
productivity and high productivity demands skilled workers; and
WHER.EAS, these critical economic races must be won at the starting
line-in our nation' s classrooms ; and
WHEREAS , the greatest waste of natural resources is the number of
children who never achieve their potential ; and
"WHEftEAS , there is no uneducatable child- no unteachable child,
there are only children that we fail to teach in a way that
benefits their individual conditions; and
WHEREAS , schools are only one element in the education of children;
and
WHEBEAS, winning the education race requires more than public
money, more than public laws ; It requires public commitment-from
every segment of the public; and
WHEREAS , the City Council of the City of Friendswood desires to
take all appropriate action in support of our local schools ,
students , teachers , and parents which will manifest our leadership
and cammitment to help reach the goal of improved education for our
children, now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL �F THE CITY OF FRIENDSWOOD,
TEXAS :
Section 1 . That we support the six National Educational Goals
established by the nation' s fifty state governors and promoted by
the President of the United States .
Section 2. That we support efforts to increase the rate of high
school graduates and help insure that every child entering school
will be ready to learn.
Section 3 . That we support the efforts of our local school
districts to have our students become world leaders in science and
mathematics as well as to assure that every American possesses the
knowledge and skills necessary to compete in a global economy and
exercise the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
Section 4 . That we suppart efforts to provide a safe environment
free of drugs and violence.
Section 5. That we advocate the involvement and commitment from
every segment of our community; city/county government , schools
(administrators , teachers , school boards , staff) , Chambers of
Commerce, area universities and colleges , businesses , Clear Lake
Area Economic Development Foundation, ministerial alliances , law
enforcement , community civic and service organizations , PTA' s ,
senior citizens , Johnson Space Center , students and parents .
Section 6 . That we support the efforts of the Board of Directors of
Partners in Space ta create an educational agenda that will be
conducive to achieving the goals.
Section 7 . That the City secretary be, and is hereby, directed to
forward a copy of this Resolution to our local school districts .
