HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 95-20 RESOLUTION R95-20 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF FRIENDSWOOD, TEXAS, SUPPORTING THE HUMAN SPACEFLIGHT PROGRAM AND URGING THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES TO RECONSIDER THE REORGANIZATION OF NASA WHICH WOULD ELIMINATE OVER 7,000 JOBS AT AND ASSOCIATED WITH THE JOHNSON SPACE CENTER. * * * �t � * * � WHEREAS, for over 30 years 3ohnson Space Center has been the cornerstone of America's human spaceflight program; and WHEREAS, Johnson Space Center is a major contributor to the area economy, providing jobs and homes to thousands of people; and WHEREAS, the residents and business entities of Galveston County are direct beneficiaries of the expertise of personnel, aerospace contractors, suppliers, technicians, and other professionals and programs located in Galveston County and on site at the National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA) installation at the Johnson Space Center; and WHEREAS, the knowledge, skill, and expertise brought to this area by Johnson Space Center and its contractors have made Texas and our community world leaders in the development and marketing of new technology; and WHEREAS, the expenditure of every $1.00 related to the Johnson Space Center injects at least $3.00 into the local economy; and WHEREAS, there is an effort underway to eliminate over 7,000 jobs from Johnson Space Center and its contractors; and WHEREAS, the elimination of these jobs will seriously affect the lives of those employees and families who ca11 this area their home; and WHEREAS, the elimination of these jobs will jeopardize an additional 21 ,000 dependent retail and service jobs throughout this area; and WHEREAS, there has been no identification of overall cost savings or improvements to the efficien�y of NASA as a result of these announced cuts; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FRIENDSWOOD, STATE OF TEXAS: THAT each and every member of Congress should question the need for this reduction and require documentation for such a decision. THAT the members of Congress confirm the decision made over 30 years ago that integrated design and development of the space program, such as was accomplished at Johnson Space Center with Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and the Shuttle works and will continue to work if left alone. THAT the lives of thousands of citizens in this community should not be tampered with and that Johnson Space Center should be left intact for the benefit of the Clear LakejFriendswood area, the State of Texas, and the United States of America, and all the other countries of the world that have benefited from the technologies produced from this program. THAT the City of Friendswood registers support for retaining the operations and engineering divisions at the Johnson Space Center that together have produced outstanding achievements in space exploration, as well as numerous medical and scientific advances which have improved the quality of life for a11 people.
