BUILDING CODE A NEW SECTION 706. 8 ; PROVIDIPdG iT UNLAW-

OR SHAKES ARE FIRE RETARDANT TREATED AS DEFiNED BY THE
UNiFORM BUILDING CODE STANDARD N0. 32-7 , 1976 EDITION;
PROVIDING OTHER �'1ATTERS RELATING TO THE SUBJECT; PROVID-
ING A PENALTY OF AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $200 �OR EACH
DAY OF VIOLATION; AND REPEALiNG SECTIOr1S 4-1 AND 4-2
OF CHAPTER 4 OF THE FRIENDSWOOD "CITY CODE .

BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FRIENDSWOOD,
STATE OF TEXAS :
Section l . The 1979 Edition of the Standard Building
Code, as published by the Southern Building Code Congress Inter-
national, Inc . , copy of which is attached hereto and made a
part hereof for all purposes, an authentic copy of which has
been filed with the City Secretary, is hereby adopted and for
all things made a part of this Ordinance .
Section 2 . The fo�lowing Section 706 . 8 is hereby adopted
and incorporated into and made a part of Chapter 7 of the Stan-
dard Building Code:
"706 . 8 WOOD SHINGLES OR SHAKES - MULTI-FAMILY DWELLINGS
" (a) Pdotwithstanding any other provision of this code,
no wood shingles or shakes shall be used in the con-
struction of any multi-family dwelling unless such
wood shingles or shakes have been fire retardant treat-
ed as provided by Uniform Building Code Standard No .
32-7 , 1976 Edition.
"-(b) Existing multi-family structures which have wood
shingles or shakes which are not fire retardant treat-
ed may be repaired with wood shingles or shakes of a
comparable grade if such repairs are not substantial .
The building official shall determine if the repair
is substantial . However, in no event shall repair of
twenty-five percent (25%) or more of the surface area
of the nonfire retard�nt treated wood shingles or
shakes be considered unsubstantial . If, in the opinion
of the building official , the proposed or needed re-
pairs constitute a substantial replacement of existing
nonfire retard�nt treated wood shingles or shakes , the
following shall apply:

" (1) The replaced wood shingles or shakes
shall be fire retard�nt treated; or
" (2) The owners shall have the option of
installing Class 'A' , Class `B' , or Class
' C' roofing material over the existing
nonfire retardant treated wood shingles or
shakes, providing the existing roof and
structural system is adequate for modifi-
cation. "
Section 3 . Any person violating any provision of this
Ordinance, or of the 1979 Edition of the Standard Building
Code, as adopted hereby, shall be deemed guilty of a mis-
demeanor and, upon conviction, shall be fined not more than
two hundred dollars ($200.00) . Each day of violation sha11
constitute a separate offense.
Section 4. Sections 4-1 and 4-2 of Chapter 4 of the
Friendswood City Code are hereby repealed.
