ORDINANCE NUMBER /0
AN ORDINANCE PROVIDING THAT THE FIRST ANNUAL ELECTION FOR
THE OFFICE OF MAYOR AND CITY COUNCILMEN FOR THE CITY OF
FRIENDSWOOD, TEXAS, SHALL BE HELD ON THE FIRST TUESDAY IN
APRIL, 1962, AND THAT THE OFFICE OF MAYOR AND TWO COUNCIL-
MEN SHALL BE FOR A TERM OF TWO YEARS AND THREE COUNCIL-
MEN SHALL BE FOR A TERM OF ONE YEAR AND THAT THE TERMS OF
COUNCILMEN TO SERVE ONE YEAR AND TWO YEAR TERMS SHALL BE
DETERMINED BY LOT AT THE TIME THE RETURNS OF THE CITY
ELECTION ARE CANVASSED AND OFFICIAL RETURNS MADE;
WHEREAS, the Board of Aldermen ( City Councilmen) and the Mayor of the
City of Friendswood, Texas , are desirous of staggering the terms of the
Board of Aldermen elected at the first annual election to be held in said
City since its incorporation, in order that from and after the first annual
election-; three Aldermen shall be elected at the next annual election and a
Mayor and two Aldermen shall be elected the following year so that a new
Council shall never be required to be elected in any one year. Now,
therefore ,
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE BOARD OF ALDERMEN OF THE CITY OF
FRIENDSWOOD, TEXAS:
That in accordance with the provisions of Article 979 of Title 28 of the
Revised Civil Statutes of Texas , Five (5) Aldermen and One (1) Mayor shall
be elected at the annual election of officers on Tuesday, April 3, 1962, and
that immediately after the elections returns are officially canvassed and the
candidate receiving the highest number of votes declared elected, the newly
elected Mayor shall thereupon cause five numbers to be written on identical
slips of paper, three of such slips to have the words "One Year Term" and
two of the slips to have the words "Two Year Term" written on such slips ,
and each of the five Aldermen who have been elected shall draw a slip from
the hat or other container and those drawing one year slips shall serve for
a term of one year and those drawing two year slips shall serve for a t Irm

of two years , and thereafter all officers shall serve for a term of two years

after having been elected.
This Ordinance shall take effect immediately upon its passage
and approval,:and it is so ordered.
