A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF FRIENDSWOOD, TEXAS, IN
SUPPORT OF THE UNITED STATES HUMAN SPACE FLIGHT
PROGRAM AND THE JOHNSON SPACE CENTER.

WHEREAS: The human space flight achievements of NASA, the Johnson Space Center
and the nation's space program represent events of historic proportion; and
WHEREAS: The prospects for future space developments and missions, including
such major accomplishments as completion of the International Space Station
returning to the moon and voyaging to Mars would also prove of great historic
importance; and
WHEREAS: The NASA human space flight efforts have resulted in numerous medical,
technological and scientific developments with direct, positive impacts on our
economy and the lives of American families; and
WHEREAS: A fully functional International Space Station would provide the
opportunity for major medical, technological and scientific research; and
WHEREAS: The space shuttle, space station and other current and planned space
missions represent great examples of human achievement that motivate students
in their education, especially in the fields of engineering, mathematics and
the sciences; and
WHEREAS: The NASA space program represents more than $4 .2 billion in Texas
business and more than 49 thousand state-wide jobs, the majority from the
human space flight program; and
WHEREAS: NASA distributes more than $34 million in research funds to Texas
universities and medical schools; and
WHEREAS: For every dollar in spent on the U.S. space program, the long-term
result is nine additional dollars in economic gain for our nation's economy;
and
WHEREAS: The NASA human space flight program is facing severe reductions in
its budget that will greatly reduce the capability of the International Space
Station and other key space efforts; and
WHEREAS: Continued budget shortfalls will force NASA to reduce the level and
quality of research and development at the Johnson Space Center and aboard the
International Space Station, as well as planning and preparations for future
human space flights; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FRIENDSWOOD, TEXAS:
That the President of the United States and the U.S. Congress provide
The funding and support necessary for NASA and the Johnson Space Center to
Continue a robust and visionary human space flight program, including the
completion of the International Space Station.
