R2013-18 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FRIENDSWOOD, TEXAS, NAMING JOYCINA BAKER THE OFFICIAL HISTORIAN OF FRIENDSWOOD, EXTENDING THE CITY'S APPRECIATION FOR HER SERVICE AND DEVOTION TO THE COMMUNITY. WHEREAS, after graduating fiom Friends University in Wichita, Kansas, Joycina Balser became a Texan by choice by marrying her husband Jim, living in Friendswood since 1948 and raising their four children here, and; WHEREAS, Joycina started the first newspaper in Friendswood by typing out news on a manual typewriter and posting it at the Baker Grocery Store and sending it to citizens, and; WHEREAS, for the City's Centennial in 1995, Joycina researched and published the book Friendswood—A Settlement of Friendly Folks, and; WHEREAS, Joycina has been at the forefront of the Friendswood Historical Society since its inception and actively promotes the city's history through the Society, and: WHEREAS, Joycina has participated in the annual tours provided for all third grade classes, and initiated the trunk lady traveling history lessons enjoyed by Friendswood Independent School District's second graders. She continues to be requested as a speaker on Friendswood history not only locally but to organizations in surrounding areas, and; WHEREAS, Joycina represents Friendswood on the Galveston County Historical Commission, and is a member of the Texas State Historical Society, and; WHEREAS, in 2011, Joycina was named the 2011 Honorary Alumna for the Friendswood High School Alumni Association, and; WHEREAS, Joycina has been the originator and primary leader on all efforts for historical markers within the City of Friendswood including the 2012 effort to install seven new historical markers for the Friendswood Quaker Trail project, and; WHEREAS, in 2013 she was honored by the Galveston Historical Foundation for her work in historical preservation in Friendswood, AND WHEREAS, there is no other person in the City of Friendswood who knows more about the history nor has done more for the preservation of the history of our city. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FRIENDSWOOD, TEXAS, that Joycina Baker is hereby named the honorary Official Friendswood Historian for the City of Friendswood from this day forward.
