HomeMy WebLinkAboutLibrary Board Minutes 2023-07-18 Regular MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES JULY 18, 2023 THE CITY OF FRIENDSWOOD LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES MET IN A REGULAR MEETING ON TUESDAY, JULY 18, 2023, AT 6PM, IN THE JOYCINA BAKER CONFERENCE ROOM, LOCATED IN THE FRIENDSWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY, 416 SOUTH FRIENDSWOOD DRIVE, FRIENDSWOOD, TEXAS, WITH THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS PRESENT CONSTITUTING A QUORUM: DIANE FREEMAN CHAIR JO BETH BRIZENDINE VICE CHAIR BETTY STACY COMMITTEE MEMBER BENETTE ROWLEY COMMITTEE MEMBER MADDIE SHORT COMMITTEE MEMBER MARK CRAWFORD COMMITTEE MEMBER SHARON TAIT COMMITTEE MEMBER COMMITTEE MEMBER NEETA JAMBHEKAR AND BRETT STEPHEN WERE ABSENT FROM THE MEETING. 1. CALL TO ORDER Diane called the meeting to order at 6pm. 2. PUBLIC COMMENT There was no communication from the public. 3. MINUTES A. Consider approving the minutes of the Library Advisory Board meeting held on May 16, 2023. A motion was made by Maddie and Mark seconded to approve the minutes for the meeting on May 16, 2023. 4. DISCUSSION A. Discuss Needs Assessment/Feasibility Study for library facility. Matt opened up a discussion about using Friends and Library funds to conduct a Needs Assessment/Feasibility Study to determine if the library building is in need of expansion/renovation. Matt shared that the study would cost 10% of the cost to build according to the firm the library is considering using. Mark asked for the percentage of Friendswood residents using the library. Matt said it would be difficult to determine because the library services more than just Friendswood residents and some families have one shared card among them but he would see if he could find a number. Trish inquired about more information regarding what the study will entail because it is a high price. Benette pointed out that there are many people that use the library that don't have library cards and the importance of having that number. Karen mentioned that we use a door count for library attendance to count patrons who may not have library cards. Sharon asked what the library's biggest priorities were for expansion. Matt said a technology space, more study rooms, and also a space for the Friends. Matt asked Lbrary Board ofTrusices Meeiing Moms July 18,2023 Page 2 of 2 for the board to vote at the next meeting on whether or not we should use this firm to conduct the survey or continue shopping around. 5. REPORTS A. Receive the Library Director's Report. Matt shared the Director's report about the recent programs and other happenings at the library. He shared that the library has our first graduate of our Gale Excel Adult High School Scholarship Program. The library will hold a small graduation for Megan Mays on August 12th at 2pm if the board or Friends members are interested in attending. Matt shared that the library has hired a new library page, Sophie Nguyen. Dru Watkins was also promoted to Reference Librarian. B. Receive an update from Library Liaisons. Diane shared that the Friends will be having a Holiday book sale in December. Maddie shared that the Friends Gala planning is going well, there have been some interesting silent auction items donated so far. Benette asked if anyone on the board knows anyone with a beach house in Galveston or a weekend getaway house to include in their silent auction. Shawna mentioned that FISD has a few new librarians and is looking forward to meeting with them. The Junior High is also getting a part time aide as well. She mentioned that she will bring photos of the new library to the next meeting. 6. ADJOURNMENT The meeting adjourned at 6:58pm.
