LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES
MARCH 21, 2023
THE CITY OF FRIENDSWOOD LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES MET IN A REGULAR
MEETING ON TUESDAY, MARCH 21, 2023, AT 6PM, IN THE JOYCINA BAKER CONFERENCE
ROOM, LOCATED IN THE FRIENDSWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY, 416 SOUTH FRIENDSWOOD
DRIVE, FRIENDSWOOD, TEXAS, WITH THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS PRESENT
CONSTITUTING A QUORUM:

JO BETH BRIZENDINE VICE CHAIR
BETTY STACY COMMITTEE MEMBER
NEETA JAMBHEKAR COMMITTEE MEMBER
BENETTE ROWLEY COMMITTEE MEMBER
MARK CRAWFORD COMMITTEE MEMBER
COMMITTEE MEMBER BRETT STEPHEN, COMMITTEE MEMBER MADDIE SHORT, AND
COMMITTEE MEMBER SHARON TAIT WERE ABSENT FROM THE MEETING.
1. CALL TO ORDER
Diane called the meeting to order at 6:03PM.
2. PUBLIC COMMENT
There was no communication from the public.
3. MINUTES
A. Consider approving the minutes of the Library Advisory Board meeting held on January 17,
2023.
A motion was made by Mark and Neeta seconded. The minutes were approved.
4. AWARD PRESENTATION
A. Present 2023 Friendswood Library Programming Award.
The 2023 Friendswood Library Programming Award was presented to local fine artist, Irina Varentsova,
who has given art classes for all ages at the library over the years. She is preparing to hold adult classes
at the library soon. She is also going to have a ceramics art installation at the library on May 6th that the
library hopes will become an annual event.
5. REPORTS Receive the Library Director's Report.
A. Receive the Library Director's Report.
Matt gave the Director's report. He gave an update on the Gale Excel High School program, we might
have our first graduate soon. Matt shared some of the recent library programs including a very successful
cubing contest,Strategy Card Game Meetups, K-Pop Club,as well as some upcoming music performances
from Peter Fletcher and Flamenco Guitarist Gladius.

Matt mentioned that the library hired a new Library Page, Addina Bodie.
Matt shared the library's interest in creating more rooms and possibly expanding the building using
fundraising efforts over the next several years. Matt asked for the board's support for the idea. Shawna
shared that local businesses, like UTMB, might be interested in donating money to have their name on a
room in the library. Steve suggested that staff have an architect draw up a sample of what could be done
to have on display during the Gala.
Matt also gave an update on the process for getting a library van. He shared that it is taking longer than
expected because of the type of vehicle we are hoping to get. Matt is looking into getting something
smaller instead to expedite the process. There was discussion about the pros and cons of getting a smaller
vehicle.
Diane mentioned that the Friends are having another large book sale May 18-20th. Diane also shared that
the on-going book sales are going well in raising around $300 each month.
B. Receive an update from the Friends of the Library members regarding the Friends of the
Library Gala.
The next Library Gala meeting will be after the Friends of the Library meeting on Tuesday, April 4th at
6pm.Jo Beth shared that the theme of the Gala will be Alice in Wonderland as well as an update on where
they are in the planning process. Benette and Jo Beth stressed that the planning committee and the Friends
need all the help they can get.
Karen asked if the Friends were interested in selling the extra copies of The Night Circus from the previous
Gala at the next Book Sale. Jo Beth thought this was a good idea.
C. Receive updates from Library Liaisons.
Shawna and Bethany did not have anything new to share.
Steve Rockey shared that his sister is an Entomologist and would be interested in doing a program for the
library.
7. ADJOURNMENT
Neeta motioned and Jo Beth seconded and the meeting adjourned at 6:57pm.
