HomeMy WebLinkAboutLibrary Board Minutes 2023-01-17 RegularMINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES JANUARY 17, 2023 THE CITY OF FRIENDSWOOD LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES MET IN A REGULAR MEETING ON TUESDAY, JANUARY 17, 2023, AT 6PM, IN THE JOYCINA BAKER CONFERENCE ROOM, LOCATED IN THE FRIENDSWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY, 416 SOUTH FRIENDSWOOD DRIVE, FRIENDSWOOD, TEXAS, WITH THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS PRESENT CONSTITUTING A QUORUM: DIANE FREEMAN CHAIR JOBETH BRIZENDINE VICE CHAIR BETTY STACY COMMITTEE MEMBER BRETT STEPHEN COMMITTEE MEMBER MADDIE SHORT COMMITTEE MEMBER MARK CRAWFORD COMMITTEE MEMBER SHARON TAIT COMMITTEE MEMBER COMMITTEE MEMBER NEETA JAMBHEKAR AND COMMITTEE MEMBER BENETTE ROWLEY WERE ABSENT FROM THE MEETING. 1. CALL TO ORDER Diane called the meeting to order at 5:59pm. 2. PUBLIC COMMENT There was no communication from the public. 3. MINUTES A. Consider approving the minutes of the Library Board meetings held on September 27, 2022 and November 15, 2022. A motion was made by Maddie and seconded by Betty to approve the minutes. The minutes were approved. 4. REPORTS A. Receive the Library Director’s Report. Matt presented the Director’s report, highlighting recent and upcoming events and future library projects. Matt answered questions about the new Gale Excel High School Scholarship Program the library is starting at the end of January for people who wish to earn their high school diploma. Matt shared the success of the library’s recent renovation, the removal of the three walls in the middle of the library. Matt mentioned the open library page position. He also mentioned we have a new intern as well that will be working on our digital archive project. Library Board of Trustees Meeting Minutes January 17, 2022 Page 2 of 2 There was discussion about the recent book challenges in libraries and the procedure the library has in place to handle requests for reconsideration by the public. Matt emphasized the importance of the library board for these matters. Shawna shared what the process is like for Friendswood High School as well. Diane shared that the Book sales in December made around $1,200. Diane suggested advertising the Friends upcoming events on the back page of the Library Lines where the memberships are often advertised. 5. ACTION ITEMS A. Discussions and Possible Action on the Friendswood Library Long-Range Plan. A motion was made by Maddie and seconded by Betty to approve the Friendswood Library Long-Range Plan. The Long-Range Plan was approved. 6. UPDATES FROM LIBRARY LIAISONS A. Receive Updates from the Library Liaisons. Bethany shared that she has gotten the word out about library news to various forums for homeschoolers. Steve asked how many homeschooling families there are in Friendswood. Bethany said there are 10 co- ops around the area that have about 200 families each. There was discussion about the library partnering with Bethany to provide programming for homeschoolers in the future. Shawna shared some of the recent and upcoming programs provided by Friendswood school Libraries. She shared that the elementary and junior high are back to hosting full book fairs. She reported that Christina has been coming for lunches and the kids really enjoy it. Steve asked for the status of the library van. Matt shared that the city purchasing coordinator sent a packet on leasing, which he plans to start looking into soon. Steve mentioned that someone asked him if the library has a program about raising chickens. Shawna shared that the school library has had a chicken guy come in to teach the kids how to raise chickens in the past. Matt said he would share the idea with library staff. 7. ADJOURNMENT Brett motioned and the meeting adjourned at 6:51pm.
